Repotting Philodendron Birkin

Hi everyone! I’m new to this hobby, and had a question about repotting. When I got my birkin, I just got generic soil to plant him in and that was about a month ago now. Recently, I’ve noticed his pretty little leaves curling a bit, and although I have some new growth happening (three new leaves making their way out yay) I’m wondering if it makes sense to repot him in better draining soil. Like I said it’s only been a month though so I don’t want to shock his little system or anything. Thank you! #philodendronbirkin #Philodendron

Hi Jules, welcome to Greg!

Almost all potting soils don't drain well enough for most plants. It's frustrating.

It's definitely not recommended to repot so close together as disturbing the roots is the most stressful thing for a plant.

That said, with declining heath it sounds like you may not have a choice.

If you can, wait until growing season so it has the most food and energy. Until then I recommend bottom watering.
For years I put everything in regular potting soil and watched many of them decline and die. I put philodendrons in a fast draining mix now and I think your plant would appreciate it. I don't think you need to wait if you want to go ahead and repot.
I’ll also say that a good help for now without repotting is to aerate the soil by poking around (straight up and down) with a skewer or chopstick. I agree, potting soil has great nutrients but it’s super dense.
I would repot if you think the soil is not good for your plant. I did that with my recent white fusion and she did fine. Also planning to do it to my pink Princess as her soil is too clumped keeping it moist for a long time and she does not seem to be liking it.
If you can put your plant in more aerated soil they would be thankful
@PlantMompy thank you so much (and to everyone in this thread as well!). I’ll keep and eye on things to see if I can wait until growing season. If the situation gets worse I’ll repot with better, draining soil asap!
@Tropicalgia this is good to know thank you. I should have done more research before repotting but I’d literally never done it beforeβ€”I’ll be more careful in the future for sure. I don’t want to lose my birkin I’ve grown so attached already haha
You're welcome!
@AscendingOrchid what do use as better draining soil?
