You can water it when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry. Give it a thorough watering until water drains out the bottom. This is usually about once a week, but less often in winter. Try to keep the soil lightly moist, but never soggy.
After the water has finished draining, tilt the pot to the side and more will probably run out, repeat a couple of times and you should have a happy tree with happy roots.
