The Gymnocalycium mihanovichii (moon cactus) colorful portion doesn't have any chlorophyll and it cannot make its own food through photosynthesis. It is placed onto a plant that is completely green so that it can continue living. This is called grafting.
Please separate both plants from that one pot and place them in two separate pots. A 3 or 4 inch pot should be big enough for just one plant and please make sure not to use regular soil as it will retain too much water for these plants. A well draining cacti and succulent soil with added amendments like perlite, sand, pumice etc will do wonders. The moon cactus babies can not be removed and planted to start a new moon cactus. They need to be grafted just like the mother plant.
Was the moon cactus originally that color when first purchased, what lighting conditions is it under, these do not require too much watering as they like to dry out completely and then you do a complete soaking until water comes out from the bottom of the pot. Does it feel mushy, hard, any rot, foul odor etc? The brown stuff on the moon cactus, is it hard, mushy etc?
