What is the Best potting soil for money tree and spider p...
Iโm looking to desperately repot my spider pant, Sage, and Money Tree, Sir plancealot ASAP. Iโve done hours of research reading blogs and there are so many different options that I just got super confused and overwhelmed. Sir Plancealot needs to be repotted ASAP because I still have him in the planter pot it arrived in. Of course it was only a few weeks ago that I realized that was just a temporary pot and it needed its own pot. I only found this out by doing research. The manufacturer the plant came from, Costal Plants (something like that) never included that in the instructions. I am also very overwhelmed by what pot to get for him? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! #ConcernedMama #SpiderPlant #MoneyTree soil">#pottingsoil
Hi Stacy, welcome to Greg! New plants can't be really overwhelming so let's try to break things down a little.
1. When a plant comes home there is no rush to repot it unless you see a major issue. They need to adjust to your home so having as few disruptions as possible is ideal. If your plant is happy, no need to rush it.
2. When it is time to repot check your oasis, it'll tell you what kind of pot your plant will like best. Technically any pot will work as long as you monitor and water accordingly and it has drainage. Personally, I leave most plants in their nursery pot and then put them inside a pretty cover pot unless it's a succulent - type plant.
3. Medium. Everyone has a different mix they like. Most bagged soils you find at Home Depot, Ace, etc will hold too much water. I suggest grabbing one and then a bag of orchid bark or perlite that sits next to it on the shelf and mixing them together about 50/50 (wear a mask with perlite). It keeps things simple in the beginning and is easy to buy more of if you run out unexpectedly.
To sum it up:
You don't need to rush to repot, and when you do only go up 1-2" in the pot type recommended on your plant card. Use 50/50 bagged mix and orchid bark or perlite from a bigger story until you've had time to get comfortable making your own mediums!
Happy repotting!
