What does she need?

#JewelOrchid My jewel orchid is growing out a bit crazy. I’m not sure what she needs. Does she need support to grow upwards like a monstera? Is she just going to grow down and out like a pothos? Should I chop her back so she can grow fuller? I’m not sure what she needs but I know it’s something. #OrchidLovers #whatsmyplantneed
12ft to light, indirect
4” pot with drainage

She is leggy from not having enough light. If you could provide her more light she will appreciate it. She can get a bit more full with some pruning to encourage some side shoots. But without giving her more light those shoots will also become leggy.

Normally under ideal conditions the will not need supports since they stay quite compact reaching a maximum of 6-12 inches tall.
@SuperbRaspfern So weird! Everything I’ve read says this plant thrives on low light. I actually have it right by a grow light though so even more weird. I think I’ll definitely cut her back and prop. Thank you so much!
Your welcome and I know it can be confusing because even when they say low light they still need light. It really just means they don’t want direct sunlight. But ideally if you can put her under a grow light she will flourish.
Make sure she is about 6-12 inches below the grow light it’s probably just a bit too far away.
Also want to point out that some grow lights don’t provide the necessary light they need unfortunately.

They need 400-700 nm for photosynthesis

Lumens mean nothing to our plants it has nothing to do about the brightness. It’s about the PAR

Photosynthetically Active Radiation that matters to them.
I guess the light issue is the same as with phalaenopsis orchids. They are also sold as low light. I guess you can just take it as "low light orchids" compared to highlight orchids like epidendrums or vandas that need ridiculous amounts of light (at least measured by my standards). Apparently, jewels do grow more terrestrial, with more dappled light, which kind of explains that reputation as well. But bright direct light shaded by undergrowth can still be bright, just not direct. I treat mine like my phals, meaning I've plunked it right on my dreary northern German window sill. Yes, it's "direct" western exposure, but at best, it gets 2 hours of direct light there, now in winter even way less. Mine is not a ludisia like yours, but still, a jewel orchid. It's a recent addition, but so far it is growing well, and in summer, I will move it a bit.
Also, I think they always grow a bit wonky. Just maybe not as leggy. In any case, it looks great. Hope you find just the right spot for it.
@MusicalRedmint well said ❀️
@SuperbRaspfern thanks. Dito. 😊
