It's fine without it. These plants come from a rocky, arid habitat and grow in substrate with very little organic material. Also be very careful with watering. If it's in the process of splitting (shedding its old set of leaves), you should stop watering altogether until the old leaves completely shrivel up and disappear. During this process, the plant gets all the moisture and nutrients it needs by re-absorbing the old leaves.
