New Bromeliad Pups
#help #Guzmania #Bromeliad @Shells_Garden
I had to repot my bromeliad because I found some little grey bugs floating in the cups after watering. Washed out the whole plant and just watered it with some diluted hydrogen peroxide. While repotting, I noticed what look like 3 new pups. I didnβt take a picture, but they were white and split at the end like leaves?
Anyways, my mother plant is starting to die because it bloomed last summer. I already had one pup and I didnβt let it get big enough before detaching. Two questions:
1. Should I push back the dirt where the pups are at the base? Or should I just leave them as is?
2. Will the mother plant stay alive long enough to keep the pups alive until they have their own roots?

@BumbleBee340 have you removed the dead flower from the mother plant? Itβs best to remove the flower after it dies so the energy of the plant goes back into the leaves and making the pups grow. Iβm not sure if the white knobs under the soil are pups itβs likely they are roots. I would think if the plant is mature, any pups that were going to grow, would already be through the soil. This is a different type of bromeliad but as you can see, my flower died and Iβm about to remove it. Iβve got 2 pups that I will remove shortly because they are big enough. Iβd just let the plant continue to grow and see if more pups shoot out.
@AmberMallow the pups are still completely buried by the dirt. They are still white and super small. Iβm only guessing theyβre pups because they donβt look like roots. Should I unbury them a little bit?
Itβs good to hear the mother plant will support them

@Shells_Garden hereβs some pictures. I unburied what I think are pups. Thereβs another on the backside of the plant too. Do you have any good resources or advice on how to cut off the flower without harming the plant?
@BumbleBee340 those might be pups! Try this YouTube video. Itβs kind of long but she goes through the entire process of cutting the flower off. https://youtu.be/DE8GXu7MRmg?si=PDr9WloLUTVu5P-D there is also another video about how to propagate the pups. Itβs here. https://youtu.be/-U9bxfzfK-Y?si=QW4uiaDGZfSUjsy-
@DaringColtsfoot yes. I have one of those as well. It is a Blushing or tricolor Bromeliad. When the center turns completely red, it should be about to flower! Looks like your plant is on its way toward flowering so keep an eye on it! π
@DaringColtsfoot itβs so cute!
@Shells_Garden thank you so much I will look into those. Should I re-cover them with the soil?
@BumbleBee340 yes I would cover them back up. They will poke through when itβs time if itβs a new pup.
