Have any of you had experience with soilless substrate (P...
@RNgjg510 Pon is a specialized, soilless plant substrate made from a blend of porous volcanic rocks like pumice, lava rock, and zeolites. It is highly prized in indoor gardening for preventing pests (like fungus gnats) and protecting against root rot. Key Characteristics and BenefitsOptimal Air/Water Ratio: Pon is highly porous, holding about 45% water and 55% air. This provides roots with excellent aeration while maintaining adequate hydration. Pest and Mold Resistant: Because it is entirely inorganic and mineral-based, pon does not rot or decay, making it incredibly difficult for mold to grow or pests like fungus gnats to lay eggs. Nutrient Buffering: The zeolites in pon absorb excess fertilizer and release it back to the plant when needed, which prevents root burn and stabilizes the soil's pH. Self-Watering Compatible: Pon is the ideal medium for self-watering planters. Its porous nature pulls water upward via capillary action, keeping roots consistently hydrated without waterlogging them. Common UsesStand-alone Substrate: Used exactly like potting soil or LECA (lightweight expanded clay aggregate), allowing you to grow a plant in a purely mineral medium. Soil Amendment: Mixed into traditional potting soil (or aroid mixes) to increase chunkiness, improve drainage, and reduce compaction.Propagation: Excellent for rooting cuttings due to the high oxygen flow to developing stems and nodes. Important ConsiderationsRequires Fertilizer: Many pre-mixed commercial pons come pre-fertilized for the first 6 to 8 months. After this, you will need to add a hydroponic or liquid fertilizer to maintain plant health. Transition Stress: Moving a plant from traditional soil to pon can cause stress or leaf drop, as the plant must adjust to a completely different watering and nutrient environment. Cost: It is typically much more expensive than standard potting soil, leading many enthusiasts to create their own DIY versions by purchasing bulk lava rock, pumice, and zeolites. I used Pon along with soil on the Golden Pothos and they are growing very well!

Thank you so much for the wonderful information, I will keep that in mind going forward. I have a really horrible fungus gnat issue due to the high humidity where I live and have tried everything except changing out the soil. 😢🥺
