Hey, Greggers with balcony plants - any tips and tricks?
I live in an apartment near the sea where it's regularly windy. When it's not windy, my south-facing balcony gets intense sun during the summer. My two concerns are:
1. How do I keep my plants hydrated? My gerbera and snap dragons need water every 2-3 days it seems and they're in the shade. I water them deeply so I'm guessing I may need to repot them with a moisture-retaining potting material. Recommendations? Or maybe also use self-watering pots or ollas?
2. How can I protect my sun-loving plants on the hotter days? I can't always be home to move them into a shadier spot.
Any other things to consider for balcony plant care?

Hi Geraldine! When I lived in an apartment, I was able to hang a couple of shades, they looked like bamboo. There was 2 ropes (you know- to pull up and let down the shade) that I tied to the railing (top part of wood fence). They helped keep harsh wind to a minimum, and the plants were able to get morningsun but not the harsh afternoon sun. Maybe you could try those outdoor curtains? I hate self watering pots- my plants were ways sitting in water and killed them. But I LOVE using Ollas- I think they’re great. I live in Texas and the heat is brutal now- and I have a ton of different sized Ollas in my plants, and they love it! As far as adding moisture retaining stuff to your soil, I might suggest the Ollas first. I always try the least intrusive first. I hope this helps! 🪴💕
