When I prepare to bring my ferns in for winter, I usually give them a really good water (enough to flush any bugs that might be hiding in the soil), and spray the outside of the pot with an insecticide.
Once they’re dry, I bring them in and put them under a grow light, and set a mini humidifier next to them. They usually aren’t particularly happy through the winter, but it keeps them going until spring.
