If a Venus Flytrap turns black, it is often part of the natural leaf lifecycle (lasting ~3 months per trap), but can also indicate improper care like overwatering or lack of light. To manage it, prune fully black traps with clean scissors to prevent mold, ensure at least 4-6 hours of direct sun, and use only distilled, reverse osmosis, or rain water. Actionable Steps to Take:
Prune Dead Traps: Trim off completely black, dead traps at the base using clean scissors to improve aesthetics and prevent fungal issues.
Check for Rot: If the blackening is spreading to the center rhizome, it could be "crown rot" due to excessive water. Reduce watering, ensure the soil is barely damp, and increase ventilation.
Increase Light: Ensure the plant is in direct sunlight. If grown indoors, it likely needs a stronger grow light or a move outdoors, as lack of light causes weak, blackening growth.
Verify Water Quality: Only use distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater. Tap water contains minerals that will kill the roots.
Reduce Feeding: Do not feed the plant more than once every few weeks, and only one trap at a time, as overfeeding leads to blackened, stressed traps. Common Reasons for Blackening:
Natural Aging: Oldest traps turn black first; this is normal.
Digestion: A trap may turn black after eating a large insect.
Dormancy: In winter, many leaves will turn black as the plant rests.
Incorrect Soil: Must be planted in a nutrient-poor, lime-free mix, such as 50:50 peat moss and perlite or sphagnum moss and sand. If the center rhizome is still white and firm, the plant can recover. If the entire rhizome is black and mushy, it is likely dead.
@Ms.Persnickety okay thank you!! This really helped!
I just got one from Lowes, an this is what it looks like. I dont believe it had good care at all
@EarlyMullein42 yes I got mine from Home Depot! They don’t take good care of them at all!
I got mine from a grocery store,a bit of a rough start but after a bit of TLC,and luck it is doing well
