New buds still sprout, but the leaves are dry as they grow, not lush and healthy.

Dry crumbly leaves generally indicate underwatering. Goat willow is a water lover, thriving in areas that have moist, even wet conditions. It does well in wetlands and bogs and is a great choice for gardens that have poor drainage. Goat willow can tolerate short droughts, though growth can be stunted under these conditions.
Goat willow will grow in most soil types but has a preference for damp soil.
Plants that require lots of sunlight also have similar water requirements. More light causes more transpiration and hence requires more frequent watering.
