Can I save my lucky bamboo??
I made a mistake I guess… I needed to shorten my lucky bamboo so they could fit in the pot without their roots showing. So.. I cut it. But I made sure there were still roots on them. I decided not to throw the lower chunks away, since they had the majority of the roots, and I stuck em in water. They seems to be doing fine, but the tops…they’re turning so yellow, I think they’re dead 😭
Is there any way I can help them??
Also, do you think the lower chunks (the second pic) will grow? #help #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #HappyPlants #LuckyBamboo #Dyingplant #PlantGraveyard

Hey 👋 they should both be fine! I would dip the cut tips of the bottom sections in melted wax to help prevent infection (see pic) but they will sit from a node sooner or later 🥰
The top section should take a couple of months to root but one thing I learned fast with lucky Bamboo is that they HATE tap water! 🤦♀️ I nearly killed mine lol
The other thing they really don't seem to like is direct sunlight! Even a little and mine started to yellow so she sits behind the upright on my windowledge... That was she gets lots of bright light but none of it direct.
Generally, even plants that like bright, indirect light will tolerate a bit of early morning or late afternoon direct sun - just an hour or two - and you can usually increase that gradually so they become tolerant. My lucky Bamboo absolutely WILL NOT tolerate it I discovered lol 🤣 so perhaps that's what's happening here?
The other big factor you need to be careful with is go really easy if your using any kind of fertiliser (even a gentle, natural one) coz they're really sensitive to that to apparently!
I hope one of these three things chimes as a possible cause? 🤔 They seem to be the top three causes of yellowing in this plant (imo anyway) xx

@JenniB81 THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
I hadn’t noticed this reply until just now, and was getting so worried that my bamboo is gonna die because they’re getting so much worse! I’ll try some of your suggestions!

@JenniB81 neither of my bamboo are in tap water.
Neither have ever been in direct sunlight, the big one stays on the table near a southfacing window, while the little guy is under a grow light.
I actually am really terrible at fertilizing my plants, I hardly ever do🫣🫢🤫🫠 I do give my bamboo an epsom salt solution as it help with being more green. But I only do that every so often.

@JenniB81 I recently read that coating wounds in wax can create a better environment for infections to grow, so I would research that one a bit
I would have just repotted her 🤔 I don’t have any advice that could help you in this situation beyond some rooting hormone for the tops. In the future, though, you shouldn’t prune more than a third of a plant at a time and it’s important to leave some leaves on both any clippings you intend to use and the original plant whenever you can, or they can’t photosynthesize (this is about plants in general, I don’t know if there are exceptions to this). If I were you, I would google lucky bamboo propagation and take a clipping from the tops in case she doesn’t recover.
I have always heard that if you’re lucky bamboo is starting to yellow you need to get rid of that part right away because you can’t save it, and it will infect the other parts of the plant! ?? That is what I have been told of course so that is what I do. I have a few of them and they seem to be doing pretty fine but yes when I start to see yellow, I pull it up out of there and get away from the rest of the plant and I don’t seem to have any issues for a while, if at all. I also learned that they prefer distilled water. Someone else did tell me that they like to be bottom watered, hmm idk, but I don’t do that for these.
@tunnybiger I’d love an update on any changes you’ve made and how they are responding if you feel like sharing 🫶🏻
@ViolentPixie are you speaking to the author of this side sub? :) I do do hope the bamboo is doing ok.
@Keysgirl0179 lol, yes. I should @ them
@ViolentPixie UPDATE:
I just ended up leaving both ends of my cuttings alone, as i was very busy suddenly for a few days. Things have gone drastically downhill for the big ones (the tiny ones are fine so far)!
Unfortunately since i was busy, I didn’t see the info regarding to the pruning of the plant when it starts to go yellow, and the yellow has spread to almost the entire plant (there’s two identical lucky bamboo plants i have thatre taller then my other five, and these are the ones I’ve been talking about. I originally cut them to fit them in the same pot with the other five).
As well as yellowing, their stalks are wrinkly and, as of today, they’ve developed brown splotches. And they stink like rotten something or meat!
I think its safe to say they’re too far gone :(
Buuut… do you think i can try to save the tops??

@tunnybiger dang, I’m so sorry to hear that! I would totally try proping those tops, though! I’m not familiar with how to prop bamboo though
