Thank you @UltraKoreanfir ๐Ÿค— Melisse .This prickly pear needs 11 h of bright direct (best outdoors) sunlight daily; needs to be repotted to a pot with drainage hole with the coarse cacti soil. The soil needs to be completely dry before watering (every 10 to 14 days in Summer) once a month in Winter. It's the best to check the soil if completely dry before watering (especially in Winter). When you water you water profoundly with the rain water or the distilled water only, no tap water-too much calcium will suffocate the roots. The plant doesn't need fertilizing. It's wise to repot every 2 years to give the plant fresh cacti soil.
The pot is too big and the non succulent soil retains much too much moisture. You need to remove the plant, check the roots for root rot /you need to cut off the brown mushy roots, but not the main root/ , you need to air dry the plant in a shady place for 2 days, then put it in a pot that is only 1 inch bigger on one side and 1 inch bigger on the other side. Then do not water for 3 days. Then water profoundly once /until you see water coming out of the drainage hole/ and the next watering probably in a month /in Winter//
@SvelteKingfern, Do you want to provide rescue prop advice for this baby prickly pear?
Prickly pear is my speciality @UltraKoreanfir ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒต
@SvelteKingfern can I put it outside even tho it's winter?
No, it likes warm weather. Put it on the South side window sill, 0 ft to light, and you need the grow light in Winter.
The pot needs to be only 1" bigger than the plant on the left side, and 1" on the right side.
@SvelteKingfern alright thank you! I'm pretty sure we have a grow light so I'll try to find it.
That looks like lack of water and light. But u can propagate that leaf. Let it callous over then put it in moist soil. And keep soil moist, not drenched til it roots. U can also use sphagnum moss to help it root too.
Propagation of the leaf sounds good.
How to do it: put on gloves, twist the leaf and slightly pull till you separate it. Put it in a deep shade in a dry place for 3 - 4 days until the wound is dry (making the wound callous). Some people put cinnamon on the wound, but it's not necessary. It's good to dip the end in the rooting hormone (not necessary if you don't have any).
Stick the leaf in a small pot with drainage hole in a dry cacti soil. Put the pot in a bright but indirect light. Do not water for 5 days. Then pour 3 teaspoons of water AROUND the leaf, make sure the leaf itself is dry. Keep doing this every 5 days for 2 months. You'll have a new rooted prickly pear (there's always around 15% risk of failure).
@SvelteKingfern is a deep shade a dark place sorry if that is a dumb question
It is a dark place. People usually put propagation leaves in an empty cardboard shoe box, with the lid on. I put mine on a shelf in a cupboard ๐Ÿค—
