I bought this poor thing from my local Walmart.. my husband put it outside not thinking about how it was supposed to be an indoor plant.. ever since, I've been trying to nurse her back to thriving. Lost the majority of her, but I've got new growth, just want to clean up what isn't serving her anymore.. but I don't want to lose any more either.. need trimming help.. bad

what do you mean by roots above the soil? Can we get a photo? Sometimes plants have what's called air roots. And you should remove any dead leaves or dead roots. Anything yellow, black, or brown. For roots, don't remove it unless you're sure it's dead, roots can be harder to tell if it's alive.
if you're seeing "above the soil roots" or "air roots" at the bottom of the plant, you may need to add more soil. If you're seeing air roots at the middle or top of the plant, leave them. Plants make those to gather more water from the air when they're not getting enough from the ground. It could also be a sign it needs more water
