How to chop your #FiddleLeafFig

Hey all! My rubber plant and #flf are thriving but I’m ready for them to branch out (I know, lame pun). Do I literally just… chop the top to get them to make two branches? Do I need to protect the wound at all? I want to try this soon but it’s terrifying! #RubberPlant

Hi Sarah!

The first chop is so scary, but so worth it! Ficus will branch where their leaves are produced. When you cut be sure to do it just above a leave and it'll usually branch the next 2-3 leaves down depending upon the light it receives. Here are some of mine!
Also, be prepared for FAST roots. This was a top cut I took a month ago.
@PlantMompy COOOOL! I think that’s what will keep me from crying, is knowing I’ll also have a little Junior to throw in a vase. You don’t do anything to coat/protect the β€œwound” on the original plant, right?
@PlantMompy I can’t make the chopped grow root. Any tips for this?
No, I don't. I usually keep a damp cloth to try and wipe away the sap so it doesn't cover the whole plant but that's all the "wound" care I do.
@Consocmap how long ago did you cut it? What are you rooting it in? How much light does it get?

They usually start with little white nubs that look like roots but don't grow much. Do you have those?
@PlantMompy I cut 2 days ago. After cutting I paste the healing glue on the wound, let it dry and dip it into rooting hormone.
The can is placed at the balcony with a bit direct sunlight around 9am, other times are covered with shade.
I think I failed it since brown patches are showing on the leaves already
@Consocmap I've used rooting hormone but not the other things before.

Personally with ficus I just place them in water, I don't add anything.

Fiddle leaf figs tend to throw fits so I'm not surprised there is some browning, but the roots would definitely take longer than two days.

If you're worried you could always cut off the bottom and try again.
@PlantMompy so I just should leave it like that for more time. How long did it take to start growing roots on yours?
