Think I can make this stringy plant grow up this stick?
Yes, with enough work and patience! Youβll need to guide it and tie it for a bit, but after it gets a good hold of the stick with arial roots, you should be able to remove your supports! All new growth that doesnβt cling to the stick will need to be tied back to it as well, so itβs going to be quite some upkeep, but itβs worth it!
To help your stringy Zebrina plant (Tradescantia zebrina), also known as wandering Jew, grow up a wooden stick in its pot, follow these steps:
Choose the Right Stick: Select a clean, sturdy wooden stick thatβs tall enough to support the plantβs growth. Bamboo stakes work well due to their strength and smooth texture.
Insert the Stick: Gently push the stick into the soil near the base of the plant, being careful not to damage the roots.
Secure the Stems: Use soft plant ties, garden twine, or even strips of soft fabric to loosely secure the plantβs stems to the stick. Make sure not to tie them too tightly as it can damage the plant.
Encourage Growth: As the plant grows, continue to tie new growth to the stick, guiding it upward. Regularly adjust ties to accommodate stem growth.
Provide Proper Care: Ensure the plant gets bright, indirect light and maintain consistent wateringβallow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Regular feeding with a diluted balanced fertilizer during the growing season can also promote healthy growth.
Prune as Needed: Trim any leggy or unhealthy growth to encourage fuller, bushier growth, which will help the plant climb more effectively.
By following these steps, your Zebrina (Tradescantia zebrina) will climb the wooden stick beautifully, adding a vibrant, cascading touch to your space.οΏΌor wandering Jew) grow up a wooden stick in its pot, follow these steps:

@MilkNewt so are you saying that I can have any dangling leaves because it would confuse the plant on which way itβs supposed to grow?
@SirNapaea18 the plant will grow in whatever way is easiest for it, so if the vines that sprout off get too heavy, theyβll keep going in that direction. Once they get a firm grip they should start climbing on their own, but itβs always something to watch out for :)
