Looking for trips and tricks!
Looking for tricks on my variegated false bird of paradise! I just repotted it because it was not drying out after a few weeks. Some of its leafs are also struggling. Itβs sitting on a heating pad and has its own humidifier. Please send any tips for wintering this baby indoors.
0ft to light, indirect

Hey Paul π ooh she's so pretty! π€© Look at the size of her!! That must've been a fun repot π but those leaf blades are just gorgeous π
If you've tripped her in the last week or two I wouldn't panic to much, she probably got a dose of transplant shock (they all do to some extent usually) so is probably sulking a wee bit π and I should also say... I don't have a Heliconia! Lol I do have a Strelitza Reginae but they are a bit different.
I mean, she looks glorious so you're obviously making her happy! If her previously new leaves were struggling and cooking in a bit small, the repot will likely help. Depending on the ambient temp in your house you may not actually need the heat mat, but it's for to be prepared as we head towards winter, and your right that they LOVE humidity!
Heliconia are actually coastal and mountain plants so they can handle cooler temps, and they like their soil to be that (I always shudder when I hear it) "consistently moist" π which is a bugger for causing root rot if you over do it and hard not to let it dry out too much!
If you've not seen brown patches etc I think you escaped root rot, despite your saying her previous soil wasn't drying out well (I assume you checked when you repotted her anyway, but you never know folks experience levels on her so sorry if that sounded a bit condescending! It wasn't meant that way).
If she's been outdoors for the summer it might also just take and adjustment period for her having been moved indoors now,.. I have friends who always tell me their indoor/ outdoor plants always prefer being outdoors in the end! Which I guess is only natural really π
Do you have photos of the areas you're concerned about? I'm happy to take a look and it may help someone else to give you those tips π xx
