How to tell if it’s dead 💀?

#Mammillaria This little feather cactus sits on south/southwest front outdoor porch. Gets direct sun. I don’t know if it’s dead or not. Should I pull the feathery stuff apart? Trying to give it a drink to see if it drinks or not.

If you don't see roots that are light colored and stand out from the soil, I'd say time to let it go.

I couldn’t wait. Some of the bottom looks like a plucked chicken, Pinkish. A few look on the blackish side. Some are green. Got these little pods out of it.
