Yes! Pruning and pinching back moss rose and purslane (both from the Portulaca family) is an excellent way to keep them bushy, promote new growth, and encourage prolific blooming. How and When to Prune Moss Rose and Purslane. 1. Pinching for Bushy Growth (Spring)Early in the season, pinch back the tips of the growing stems by 3 to 4 inches. This encourages branching, resulting in a much fuller, denser plant rather than long, sparse vines. 2. Mid-Summer ShearingBy mid-summer, the plants may become leggy or less productive. You can aggressively prune or shear them back by up to half their size. This refreshes the plant and forces a vibrant second flush of blooms for late summer and fall. 3. Cleaning Up- Remove any dead, diseased, or mushy stems to improve air circulation and prevent rot. While deadheading (removing individual spent blooms) is not strictly necessary as they are self-cleaning, removing old blooms can jump-start new flowering cycles. 4. Propagation- If you prune off healthy, 4-inch stem cuttings, you can easily propagate them. Strip the foliage and flowers from the bottom few inches of the stem, plant them in a well-drained soil mix, and keep them in bright, filtered light to root within two weeks. I hope this helps ๐ชด๐
