What kind of water is best for Curly Bonnie SPs?
I have only been using distilled water on her as that was the overwhelming advice I was given. She seemed completely happy until she suddenly lost colour and curls. You can see in past photos how she looked compared to right now. I gave her some regular tap water today and she perked up a bunch but her colour hasnβt recovered. Do I need to be balancing the kinds of water I use for her? Or is this a bigger issue that Iβm not seeing. Any advice would be so appreciated! ππΏπͺ΄ #SpiderPlant #CurlySpiderPlant #help #Question #carehelp

Hi Olivia!
Lots of different answers here but the one thing I do know is that using tap water eventually kills plants because of all of the harsh chemicals that are in it.
Also, leaving it out for sometime does not remove those chemicals that are toxic to plants.
I've had great success with only using distilled water. I also add organic liquid SUPER THRIVE Foliage Pro to the water and water my plants with it mostly every time. It contains everything necessary for a plant to become healthy and thrive.
You dilute it with the distilled water. I usually make a gallon at a time. A little bit goes a long way.
You can order Super Thrive on Amazon in addition to the organic WONDER SOIL, which is an excellent coco noir expanding mix.
Just one more thing π π... Depending upon where you live, most plants need humidity to survive. Misting is a no no ..a humidifier is a yes yes!
Over time, misting creates an overabundance of moisture on the plant's topsoil which fungus gnats and bacterial infections love. It's best not to water until the first two inches of the soil are dry!
Lastly ...I spray most of my plants leaves, outer and inner, every 6 weeks with a Neem-distilled water mix. This washes the leaves and can eradicate some nasty insects.
If under grow lights, they need to be moved to indirect light and allowed to dry about 6 hours before putting back under the grow lights. This prevents their leaves from becoming sunburned.
Succulents, cacti, Alacosias, and other plants should not be sprayed.
I hope this helps! This is what I've learned from other Greggers and through my own experience... β£οΈπ€

Spider plants like your Curly Bonnie usually do best with filtered or dechlorinated tap water rather than only distilled. Distilled water doesnβt have any minerals, and spider plants actually appreciate a little calcium and magnesium. If your tap water is very hard or has a lot of fluoride, that can cause brown tips over time, but it usually wonβt cause major decline. Letting tap water sit out overnight (to let chlorine evaporate) or using filtered water is often perfect.
Since she perked up after getting tap water, Iβd keep using that (filtered if possible). The color and curl may take time to return as she grows new healthy leaves. In the meantime, make sure sheβs not rootbound, getting bright indirect light, and not staying soggy.

@CutePolypremum thank you for such a detailed answer! She is already doing better but I will definitely implement your tips ππͺ΄

@gothgardener I tried this and it helped thank you!
I agree wholeheartedly with @CutePolypremum I just found out my Bonnie & my other spider plant is doing better with the change to distilled water. My plants were doing great other than brown tips. Once I changed the water they started smiling
@GreenPurpose mine perked up within an hour of getting some tap water!
@CutePolypremum absolutely, I appreciate such a thoughtful answer!
@leafyliv if your watering schedule and amount are good the spider plant will respond. Just watch for brown tips. Pulling for you πππ
I recently watched a video about spider plants. It said we treat them like low light plants that need infrequent watering. They are actually rainforest plants and prefer to stay moist. So higher humidity and if you water too infrequently you send it into shock and can cause brown leaf tipt. Just a thought.
I have never used distilled water on my houseplants and I know have a thriving indoor garden in 2 states. A yellowing leaf probably wonβt recover but it will eventually grow new and drop old ones. Your card says last watered 23 days ago. I water every 5-7 days for my spider plants. I have never found my spiders to be fussy and they actually donβt want a lot of changes. Give it time. And enough water and light.
