Welcome to the plant life! It sounds like your plant needs better draining soil. I would recommend repotting it. Also, you do want to water until it drains out the bottom then let it sit and drain for a bit before putting it back. For me personally, I bottom water. That means I fill a container up with water and set my plants in the water. They take up what they need from the hole in the bottom of the pot. It is what works best for me! You’ve got this! 😁
Edit: when you say when you water it hasn’t drained out the bottom yet, are you meaning the water is sitting at the top or it soaked in but just didn’t drip out of the bottom?
@StockyChickpea Please look at the bottom of the decorative white pot and see if there’s a plug in the hole. If so, remove it. If there is an attached gray at the bottom, the holes may be blocked. You can check the soil and remove the plant from the pot to see what’s going on.
@iAmErica yep that’s exactly what I’m saying. Thanks for understanding. It’s just not coming out. The soils is mixed equal parts potting soil and perlite. Just didn’t come out the bottom. I always watered till it drained out the bottom which is a lot more water that Greg recommended. But now using the app and less water per instructions and now not coming out the bottom. Thank you I am enjoying plants. Can’t believe it took me this long to find the enjoyment they give!
@AnthuriumQueen thank you. I’ve watered before and it’s drained but used a lot more water than Greg’s app suggested. It’s not draining like when I water with a lot more water. So im wondering was I watering too much for it to drain, or am I not water enough since it’s not draining per the apps suggestion of 1 and 1/4 cup water
@StockyChickpea It won’t drain if it’s less water than the soil can hold and that’s based on the composition. I’m used to fast-draining due to humidity where I am. Yours may be different. It’ll eventually release what it can’t hold on to. You may have been overwatering before and now, you’re not, per what Greg is saying you should give it.
@AnthuriumQueen thank you! I think I was over watering. 😬 That’s why I originally purchased the app so I don’t do that lol im in Maryland so it’s not terribly humid here. I think next on my list a humidifier. Plants are like children. They require so much πŸ€£πŸ˜‰
@StockyChickpea oh, yes, I agree. They require lots of care until you get used to them and they stop throwing fits getting used to you. I do agree with this.πŸ˜‚
@AnthuriumQueen haha throwing fits! 🀣 That’s where I’m at. Am I loving you too much, not enough, why can’t you just tell me! 😩 thanks for your help. I’m learning so much!
@StockyChickpea it’s definitely not a bad thing to water until it drains out. When I first started using this app, I tried just giving the amount of water Greg told me, but I found it a lot easier and my plants seem to like it more when I water until it drains out. Just make sure your pot is actually able to drain, otherwise root rot will more than likely happen. And also if you set then plant on a tray after watering, make sure to dump any excess water out of the tray!! 😊
@iAmErica thank you. I felt the amount recommended on the app wasn’t nearly enough. I will do what I was doing before as it would perk up and drain and grow really well.
@StockyChickpea Yeah I had the same feeling and it seemed like my plants do better. I do follow the schedule in Greg though for most of my plants! When it says to water, I check them and more than likely water. Also, pothos are generally pretty forgiving plants. Best of luck! 😊
I always like to water until I see water leaching out of the bottom of the pot. This also helps with removing excess salt build up in your grow medium. Sometimes though when your plants roots are root bound the water doesn’t penetrate the actual soil and finds the path of least resistance and just goes straight through from the sides of the pot. Another thing to consider, is if your soil is a bit old sometimes it becomes hydrophobic and doesn’t hold onto the water and drains right on through. In this case, water a little bit at a time to penetrate to the roots. In the end, you know your plant and how it responds, so keep doing what you were doing if you were seeing positive results.
@Addicted2plants thank you so much! You helped me ease my mind. Gotta balance the app and my plants. Just grow so attached and want to keep them happy.
@StockyChickpea you’re welcome. I completely understand.
not about water but that’s not a lot of light, my golden pothos doesn’t have a whole lot of light, and it’s alive, but it lost pretty much all of its golden coloring and is basically a jade pothos, I would either give it more light or be prepared for it to lose variegation, it should live, just wanted to let you know, because i wish i knew before i put mine where i did 😭😭
Ive had plants that no matter how much i water theres no outflowπŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ They’re still alive and flourishing. Pothos are hardy plants not having outflow shouldnt be an issue as long as you dont water everyday
@jennaswitz thank you!!! I felt like if I kept watering it would be way too much water. Thanks for letting me know they are doing fine. I won’t stress as much and know they are getting water
@jennaswitz thank you! I just fixed the stats. She’s not far from the window and flourishing really well. So sorry to hear about your baby. It’s all knowledge for the next baby! πŸ₯°
