Anyone know what happened?

My #TriostarStromanthe was doing fine when we got him and for a few months after, he got a gnat infestation and he started looking the picture attached.

I think it might be a fungal infection, gnats don’t generally cause this sort of thing.

Thanks!!

If it were my plant, I would repot in fresh soil, removing all of the dead portions and dead roots (assuming there are some dead roots). Depending on the size of the root ball after cleaning it up, it might need to go down a pot size.

So a few questions to maybe help determine what’s going on -

How often do you water, and how dry is the soil when you do?
What type of water do you use?
Have you taken a look at the roots to see what kind of condition they are in?
I water him about every 5-8 days (whenever the soil is dry) I let the soil dry just until it doesn’t stick to my fingers as much. I use regular tap water (I know it’s bad). I have not looked at the roots but I will try that next.

Thanks!
The larve from gnats can also eat the roots of your plants, so it’s best to keep the population under control or kill them.
I think I’ve killed most of them between my systemic and sand on top of the soil. That might be entirely possible though (he had the infestation the worst so that makes sense)

Thanks!
@PetLuvr107 I’d definitely recommend distilled water for this one. They can be sensitive to tap water. Also humidity is very important too, they need it. If it is receiving direct airflow from A/C that can cause some issues.
@MamaAuntCa thanks! I’ll try distilled water and plan to look at the roots.
@PetLuvr107 and don’t forget the high level of humidity that is needed.
This plant has been one of my worst plants experiences. I can’t keep them alive for nothing. They are so pretty when they are big, so I keep trying over and over and over. I’m probably on my 8th one.
