@Cheese.Wizard Clematis thrives in moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter and has a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Here's a more detailed explanation:
Soil Type: Clematis prefers loamy soil, which is a good balance of sand, silt, and clay, allowing for good drainage and water retention.
Drainage: It's crucial that the soil drains well to prevent root rot, especially since clematis are susceptible to stem wilt.
pH: Aim for a pH between 6.5 and 7.0, which is neutral to slightly alkaline. Organic Matter: Amend the soil with plenty of compost or other organic matter to improve its structure, fertility, and water-holding capacity.
Avoid Fresh Manure: Do not use fresh manure, as it can burn the roots.
Cool Roots, Warm Tops: Clematis prefers to have its roots in the shade and its tops in the sun. Mulch: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help keep the roots cool and moist, and also to suppress weeds.
Planting Depth: Plant the crown of the clematis (where the root meets the stem) slightly deeper than it was in the container, about 1-2 inches below the surface. Happy Growing!
