Should I take a cutting from my English Ivy???
So this English Ivy has given me some issues here and there, idk if it’s gonna die eventually but that’s up to nature I guess. ANYWAYS, there’s this rogue stem separated from the rest on the Ivy and I’m wondering… should I cut it and propagate it??? Then it would be an extra Ivy plant in case this one dies… I would like opinions on what I should do! (If you can’t tell from my other posts I’ve been quite obsessed with propagating lately 😂) #EnglishIvy #Propagation #Cuttings
@smushface yes naturally ivies are really tough to kill! however as is the case with many plants grown indoors, they tend to be more sensitive and less tough compared to those that grow outside (due to things like humidity, temperature, light, etc) but let’s hope this ivy has the same tough spirit as the one that grew on your house lol!
@Nature_freak9 yes indoor ivy is a different beast, for sure! It grows like a weed outside here in So CA, full sun, automatic sprinklers… just what indoor ivy doesn’t like! Being in Florida though should help with propagation, higher humidity and plenty of sunshine. So propping it should be pretty straightforward. I’ve found though that if the plant is struggling sometimes the prop does too. Maybe coming off a distressed parent plant affects the prop? 🤷♀️ Anyway it’s worth a shot.
@MariansOasis yeah I’ve seen some people try to propagate cuttings from stressed plants and having iffy results. Hopefully this one will be different! I assumed that since that stem is separated from the rest of the stems already it would look less awkward if I removed it for propping. Thanks!
I’ve killed 2 ivy plants but this one I put outside on the graveyard table when it looked like it was dying 6 months ago and it came back in its own. I didn’t even notice at first. It’s worth a try on propagating. I’ve tried in both soil and water. Roots grew in water after forever but when I planted the prop in soil it died. I’d try to prop in soil first. Make like a terrarium style pot. Use a bottle that you cut in half for a top and bottom. You want something that can keep the plant covered to maintain the heat and moisture while the cutting grows roots.
@Shells_Garden tysm for the tips!!!
@Shells_Garden I love that you have a graveyard table! I have a graveyard patio 🪦. I have several out there, most recently 3 Rex begonias that thought indoor life was imprisonment!! ⛓️💥🚔. So out they went and ofc they’re loving it! I think word has gotten around though, that if you 🪴 don’t make it on the outside, next step ♻️ 🗑️ 👋 😝
