A what point does my tree need to be repotted?

Check the drainage holes. One of the easiest ways to tell if your plant is outgrowing its pot is when roots start growing out of the drainage holes. Also, if you've never repotted since getting it, it's a good idea to go ahead and do so. Commercial growers use soil that isn't great quality.
