Oh dear. That guy looks like he rotted. Iβm not sure you can save him. But, what you CAN do is learn from it and try again. I think the problem is that the soil is all wrong. These guys like very gritty soil, like 70-80% mineral grit and 20-30% cactus soil. The grittier the better, honestly. Then, they do not want to be watered until the innermost set of leaves feels softer like a gummy bear. This can take several weeks in my experience, even in very gritty soil. They also appreciate a good deal of direct light, although you have to acclimate them slowly or they burn easily. Mine are in my greenhouse for the summer (so they can enjoy sun but stay dry) and the heat helps dry their soil. I really think this soil is what did it in, and thatβs not your faultβthe growers send them in garbage soil and you just have to repot them. Instead of feeling bad about this guy, treat yourself to a new one, and try again. Even better, get a new green one AND the purple variety, βroyal flushβ!
@Jana85 That is good to know. I took some time off and o came back and he was damaged so I am sure that did not help. I will keep an eye out for a new on (who will stay at home) and use the correct soil! Thank you!
@Jana85 I have had him about 3 weeks. He was soaked when I got him.
Yep, the store may have killed him for you. That soil will hold moisture far too long, and the damage may have been already done. Try putting them in a terracotta pot, too, because they wick away moisture and dry quickly. I think terracotta really does make a difference. You can buy them at Lowes or Walmart for $1-$3.
