Leaning

My plant is leaning, much worse than at first. When I first got him he leaned quite a bit so I semi jokingly named him Leanardo. Now he's leaning much worse and I'm not sure how to fix this. I'd really appreciate some ideas on how to make him better. Thank you!

Hi McKenzie @notabotanist ! Looks like Leanardo needs more light. He would prefer to be within 1-2 feet of your eastern facing window. ☺️πŸͺŸ

When he is somewhere like he is now, 10 feet from a window, plus in a glazed clay pot he will not need water frequently. The glazed clay is not porous, so water won’t evaporate as fast as a breathable pot, such as terracotta, and if he is in this low light it means he will not be drinking water that fast either.

Because he’s leaning so much I’m a bit worried that he might have some kind of root rot going on. When soil stays damp for too long, it makes for a good environment for bacteria. The bacteria will also attack the roots.

I would recommend checking the roots and trimming off any rotten, mushy roots. Healthy roots are firm and plump and usually a white or pale cream color.

After you have trimmed the root rot, soak what’s remaining of the root ball in a hydrogen peroxide solution (1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide to 3 parts water) for 5 minutes. It will bubble and fizz which is good, it’s killing the bacteria.

Then you can repot in fresh succulent soil or soil amended with a lot of added perlite. A safe starting point is 50% perlite, but if you live in a wet or cool climate, you can add even more.

A terracotta pot would be best, and will help the roots to not remain soggy and wet after watering.

Then, move him closer to a window slowly, inching him closer over a period of a couple weeks. Good luck, you got this! 🀍
