How can I change my peperomia’s soil without damaging the...

I got this plant, identified by Greg as a peperomia rosso. The soil it came in is spongy and holds together similar to a foam plug, but it’s all the soil in its 4” pot. I think this soil holds moisture for too long. I’d like to get this plant into a well-draining mix, but I don’t know how to get this spongy soil off its roots without damaging the roots. Any suggestions?

If you gently erode the soil with your fingers, it usually won’t hurt the plant. However it is okay to disturb or hurt the roots. As long as they have some, they will usually be fine. If you are very worried about the roots, maybe they’re very delicate, you could also try to remove as much soil as you feel comfortable with an in a few weeks, remove the rest! I don’t worry much about damaging roots and I change out soil every time I bring home a new plant. I usually work off as much as I can with my hands, and if there is still some, I dip it in a cup of water and gently swish it around.
