Are yβall spikes common?
Best Answer
Those are normal it's the way new fronds develop they start out looking like spears. The leaves then will start to emerge from that. The tops of the spikes will have fronds that are itty bitty and will grow. They start out wound up really tight and then unfurl in time.
The fronds have the protective spikes or barbs at the base of the fronds off the sides to protect the delicate leaves as they emerge.
Now your is giving out excessively long etiated and has etiolation of her spears or future fronds because it's not getting enough light in a north facing window. Her new growth is attempting to stretch to access more light. So yours has an abundance of the protective spikes.
These palms have high light needs is kept indoors a south facing window with a sheer curtain is best if you can't do that then a grow light 16 hours a day.
Anyway back to the spikes she will get her fronds soon she's just in the beginning stages of development.
Despite what people think it's not really a palm, it's a cycad. It's more closely related to a pine tree. @Araceae @SvelteHoya18
Here is mine.

@Araceae there are 3 tall spikes on mine almost 3 feet tall. I was wondering if this is new growth OR something that should be removed.
@BuffCaperspurge Nice, I looked them up on your Oasis! Beautiful, this is my snow queen. Their growth is slooooow! But the are beautiful. That's really exciting about your monsteras as well. I feel like it's a good thing you don't need me anymore. π’ It's both sad and also exciting because it means you are a plant master now. Teaching and supporting others. That has always been my goal. To share any knowledge I may have so others can step out in confidence on their own.
I'm proud of you you were a great 'Seito', grasshopper.
Keep me posted on your beauties along the way. It's always great to hear from YOU!! β€οΈ
