How do you know when to repot?

I got my #FiddleLeafFig in late December and kept it in its original pot. How to I know when to repot? It has put off three leaves since I bought it, and more are sprouting now. Just curious because it seems as if some of the smaller roots have dried out atop the soil as pictured.
@Teaslowe Teagan the only true way to tell is to actually take it out of the pot it is in and check the roots. If it’s all roots and pretty much no soil then repot. Alway go up 2” size larger. But if it’s still ok just freshen up the soil as needed. And put back in the same pot. (A mix of one part compost, one part peat moss, one part perlite, and one part sand is recommended.) wish you all the best on your your plant care journey! Enjoy! ☺️
FLFs like to β€œeat their soil”. Now, they don’t really eat it, but soil naturally degrades releasing the nutrients stored. When this happens, the soil then settles or sinks in the pot, becomes more compact and exposes the upper roots. Some people swear in topping off the soil in the pot. Others will slide the plant out of the pot and look at the roots/root ball. If it looks ok, top it off. If it looks very compact, it may be time to repot.
Mine has done that as well. I recently checked the roots and she was rootbound so I gave her a new pot. I topped the soil on the top until she was ready to be repotted
