Help with identification
Hey all, I recently got this beautifully lush green plant (looks like actually up to 8 plants all potted together) shipped to me. I didn’t realize it was going to be a random. Greg and PlantNet are telling me it’s a coffee arabica , interesting! iNaturalist says it’s class magnoliopsida? Any ideas from you all? #WhatPlantIsThis #identify #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #help #nadiabynature
1ft to light, direct
4” pot with drainage

Definitely an Arabica coffee plant. You are going to want to seperate them before their roots get tangled. Otherwise the stronger one will crowd out the others.
I got 3 of them back when I got mine. They don't grow too fast only about a foot a year. What were you originally ordering?
I would just use little 4 inch pots for now. As they grow some will be faster growing and much stronger than the others. Keep the strong ones. They just grow a bunch of seeds at once and don't thin them out in nurseries. They make beautiful houseplants!

@TRose Thank you! I feel the same way I was just not expecting a coffee plant 😂 Time will tell I suppose, if it ever flowers ☕️🫘
@SuperbRaspfern That’s very helpful, thank you! You know, I don’t even remember what I thought I was ordering, but it was one from Costa farms listed as “exotic Angel multicolor colorama live plant,” and I went “oooh what’s that, it’s $5, I’m getting it!” XD But I’ve never grown a coffee plant before, exciting! Gonna go try to separate them now.
@DreamMachine Haha! They like to trick you like that. They are very beautiful plants though. They will be fun to grow. Just be very careful not to overwater at all or else they get black around the edges of the leaves. Indoors it's okay to let them dry out. 🩷
They will absolutely flower indoors and they self pollinate all on their own. So after 4 years or so when they are mature enough, you'll start seeing flowers and then coffee beans. Just make sure to provide plenty of light and humidity.
Mine are 2 years old so mine haven't flowered yet either. But I have read stories about them blooming and providing coffee beans indoors. And that will be very fun! ☕️You'll be able to open a coffee cafe with all yours!!! Haha 😂, just kidding.

I have about six coffee plants, which is quite similar to Shannon’s collection! She has provided excellent advice. My sole suggestion would be to ensure that the plant is planted in a suitable location or to pot it in a more woody material and sand. 😉 definitely make sure you get get good humidity and bright indirect light
@Idplantthat Nice! Just so you know the brown tips and edges happen when the get a bit too much to drink. If you allow them to dry fully between waterings, it won't happen anymore. 🩷
@SuperbRaspfern, I’m so impressed by your knowledge and expertise! You’re a treasure trove of information. Interestingly, the younger ones were actually brown when they came. I’ve been trying to grow it out, but my husband has been taking on more of the care and is starting to grow it himself. I’ll definitely let him know as well. Thanks a lot!
Let me know if you’d like this little guy. I just got him started. Oh, and I finally got brave enough to poke my nose into those flowers 😂. Thankfully, they don’t smell bad @ all 🤣

@SuperbRaspfern @Idplantthat Mine are still pretty happy thanks to your advice! It’s kind of hard to tell from the photo but the biggest one put out two darker olive green leaves. Top left first photo and second photo zoomed in. Is this a thing? Or a weird thing? 🙃
I definitely think Shannon @SuperbRaspfern can better explain. I’m actually really terrible at explaining things. 😢 but I found Shannon’s great at it!
@Idplantthat 😂 You are so brave!!! Oh my goodness I would absolutely love one 🩷
@DreamMachine No, it's not normal. It's usually a sign of stress. Hopefully, it is from the repot stress and once they settle in you won't get them anymore. I would just keep an eye on her for now, but not make any changes at the moment since they were recently repotted. I wouldn't want to rush to changes since they can experience a bit of shock after a repot. That would just delay the recovery time.
Since it's just the one, it's possible her roots may have become a little damaged with the repot. Which is normal, not your fault. They heal and that just takes a bit of time. 🩷
Now, if she continues after a month or so to still put out the olive colored leaves let me know. And we will work out what adjustment may be needed in care to resolve it.
Uh oh! 👀 I just noticed a couple of suspicious things I need you to look at. I marked up what I want you to look at. It looked like thrip larvae, 🤞I am hoping I am wrong. But you may have a pest I also see small brown dots from the damage of a sap sucking insect 😢
Here is what I need you to do. I'm going to explain what to look for and why.
Look at the white things I circled do they move?
Take one on a piece of white paper and squish it when you do. Is there yellow, pale green or even clear liquid left behind?
Inspect the bottoms of the leaves do you see any black dots? That is thrip poo
Do you see any silvery stippling left behind from them burrowing into leaves or stems?
When you touch the leaves are they sticky? Some thrips leave behind a sticky substance called honeydew. Not all of them do this but some do.
If you notice any of these signs get back to me and I will go over thrip treatment for you. Hopefully it's just dust. 🩷 @Idplantthat

@SuperbRaspfern You got it! I’m such a chicken when it comes to smelling things! I’m no Gus from “physic” nose (that’s no joke, my sister), but I was still freaked out. I definitely physic myself out 🤣 👃 I’ll let you know when it’s ready to ship! 😉
@Idplantthat 😂🤣😅 Your hilarious. I want to send you one in return, I can prop anything I have so let me know what plant you'd like to add to your collection. Mine are not all on my Oasis, I will add some, get sick of adding, add some more.
I have a few Hoya Australia Lisa plants that have been propping and quite a few vines, friendship plants. I have Fukien Tea Trees, Hawaiian Umbrellas that I have tons of. I have this thing where I can't throw away a perfectly good stem when I prune or will sometimes accidentally break off a vine when I'm climbing up high on ladders to tie off vines. So I just stick them in moss and make new plants. I stopped counting when I reached 500 plants because I can then deny having a ridiculous amount.
Ooh I also have a lovely little Abutilon that I have planted that I propped with no place to put it. They get these beautiful lantern shaped flowers. Well anyway, let me know, seriously not kidding when I say any 🩷🩷🩷
Thank you my friend for making such an incredibly generous offer.

@SuperbRaspfern you’re too sweet! Any of those sound so fun, just surprise me! ☺️🥰
@SuperbRaspfern I’m sorry, it’s been a long week already. 😵💫 🥱 Between trying to move things in and out of the greenhouse and my puppies, becoming real males… sometimes you just want to scream (just a little, because it’s just one of those dang it days. 😮💨) so please take me with a grain of salt 😜🥸
@SuperbRaspfern PHEW! It was just dust or little tiny bits of perlite 😮💨 I got your notification when I was already in bed but I jumped out and ran to the living room with my flashlight to check 😂. Then I moved her far away from the other plants, went back to bed, and got to thoroughly inspect her just now.
But thank you SO much for being thorough and noticing those details 🙌 🏆 You are awesome. I will keep my eye on her, it looks like her next two baby leaves are the regular color, here’s hoping it’s just minor repotting stress, but I will continue to watch her for any other changes. Thank you again!

Hello again my dear @SuperbRaspfern . I come asking your advice for spider mite treatment/protocol.
I feel lucky that I even saw this one, because I just happened to be routinely wiping a leaf off with my fingers, and then saw this teensy thing moving on my hand. I got it with a drop of soap water and looked at it with my daughter’s microscope and alas. It’s my first time with spider mites and I immediately thought of asking your advice, if you don’t mind.
Edit: I separated the plant I found it on plus all the other ones in close proximity.

No problem, I always use
Undiluted neem oil
Mix 1 tablespoon neem oil (undiluted) with 4 cups of water. Most spray bottles are 32 ounces/ 4 cups
You can also mix in 1/2 teaspoon Castile Soap if you want (it works without it too) but keep the oil and water from separating.
Treat every 3 days for 3 weeks 💕
Spray entire plant tops and bottoms of leaves/ stems. Don't miss any of it you want it dripping off, and also treat any other plants that were close by it's easier than having to repeat treatment for other plants.
Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions 🩷
