What you have is a Blossfeldia liliputana grafted onto a cereus or hylocerceus. This is a horticultural practice used to accelerate growth and make it easier to cultivate. The liliputana's tiny root system can make it difficult to grow in a typical substrate, and it is prone to rotting if overwatered.Β Grafting provides a more robust and stable root system, making it easier for growers to care for.Β
The brownish area of concern is corking of the liliputana that would typically be at soil level if it was alone. Corking is the natural process where the base of a cactus or succulent hardens and turns brown, developing a woody texture.Β This is a normal part of the plant's aging process. The plant forms this tough, protective layer to support its weight, prevent water loss, and protect itself from pests and diseases. Corking is a sign of a healthy, aging plant and is not a cause for concern. It is different from rot, which is typically soft, mushy, and often black or dark brown.
