The fee is for full use of the app. The waitlist is a different thing- but there are MANY reputable online plant sellers. Or better yet, buy from a local nursery! Not sure there’s anything special about buying plants from Greg.
@SavantApricot I agree with Deb @MamaLinne. Greg plant shop is pretty limited in choices so a local nursery or on line is the way to go. I purchase many of my specialty or rare plants from Etsy sellers. I try to buy from on line plant retailers close to my state if not in my state for the best chance of my plants arriving healthy. I’ve also purchase plants on line from Amazon and Costa Farms. I’ve gotten some great deals but I also got some duds. The annual membership on Greg does not guarantee you will gain access to the plant shop.
I 1000% agree with @MamaLinne . Nothing even remotely special about the plant shop! The entire shop only has around 25 plants, and half have been out of stock for as long as I've had access, which is about 3 years. The restocks they promised never happened. The plants are from the same large-scale commercial nursery that supplies Lowe's, except they're 2-3x more expensive. Part of that markup is likely for shipping costs, so the "free" shipping is just an illusion. Literally the only "perk" is the lifetime replacement, but that just means if your plant ever dies, they'll send you a replacement. Once. They made a big deal out of it initially, generating interest by making it seem "exclusive" and only granting access to a certain number of users at a time. Like Deb said, there are plenty of fantastic, reputable plant sellers elsewhere. Etsy for example, which is my go-to when buying plants online.
If you really want access to the plant shop just email Greg customer service. They are usually pretty good about giving access if you just ask them.
@SavantApricot

Hi Teri!
I've had beautiful plants from Costa Farms and yucky ones from Wal-Mart.
Literally been on the waiting list for like 2 years. Within the first few weeks I got a notification that I should have access, but I never got access. I did mention it in a longer support email about bugs in the app but they never addressed it. I have seen anecdotes of people who joined and emailed support asking about it after like a week and were given access, though. I literally live in the same city where they are headquartered, so it’s not a geographic thing either. I don’t think their β€˜waiting list’ system actually works properly, you just jump all over the place in the β€˜early access’ bucket; given how fundamentally simple a lot of the unresolved bugs/oversights in this app are, I’d hazard a guess that if they are doing any automated emptying of their waiting list they are doing something intern-level dumb like sorting it by month and not taking year into consideration.
@MamaLinne you can use the app without a subscription, the subscription just allows for certain features like watering reminders (which often don’t work anymore) and I think it removes restrictions on the maximum number of plants you can have… they DO position the subscription as giving early access to the plant shop, and the language is very misleading / they make it sound like you will immediately get access. I totally get why this person is asking this question.
@MamaLinne . I didn’t realize that . Thank you so much for the clarity. Appreciate it
