How do you trim the roots in a container fig tree

After you trim roots let it sit out for half a day so you don’t put the cut roots back in the soil right away to avoid infection. Just use clean scissors and only do a little at a time? I have found when I have trimmed roots on plants and went over kill I killed my whole plant. Just trim don’t shear!
