Does anyone have a h20 bowl Pothos, my plant has no soil ...
2ft to light, indirect
4β pot without drainage
Last watered 1 week ago
I've propagated cuttings from my pothos in water many times! But I always eventually move them to soil once the roots are at least 3-4 inches long. Technically they can survive in water indefinitely, but they won't thrive. Without adding a hydroponic fertilizer to the water, they'll eventually lose their green coloring and just look pretty sad overall π’ Are you considering moving yours to soil at some point?
@Topinambur surviving and thriving are two different things. Plants need nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and other essential nutrients, which they can't get from water alone. Speaking specifically to pothos, they'll rely on stored nutrients for maybe the first 6 months to a year, but then growth will start to slow, new leaves will get smaller & smaller, and eventually nutrient deficiencies (especially nitrogen) will cause leaves to yellow and overall it will just look sickly and blah.
Again, if your objective is the absolute minimum necessary to survive, then yes feel free to keep your pothos in water w/ no added nutrients for as long as you like π€

@stephonicle well, for me mine just outgrew their containers eventually before these issues started I guess and I needed to move them to soil for space purposes eventually but I did have them in water for months and months with no yellowing or small leaves so I just thought theyβd be able to continue growing in water for longer, but Iβd assume youβd be right about long term issues. That being said though, six months to a year is a very long time and the plants would probably end up moved to soil by then (the pothos I grew in just water like five years ago are still very green and colorful but got too large for my containers so I put them outside)
