Self watering pots for alocasia?

Looking for opinions/ perspectives on the use of self watering pots for alocasia? I've got an issue with humidity/extreme dryness in my house because of the heat and fireplace going basically around the clock so my watering schedule is guess work at best? I did some research on alocasia and all signs point to "heavy drinkers," so I put my black velvet and my Mickey Mouse each in their own self watering pot. I am just getting nervous despite no real signs/symptoms of overwatering or distress that this is a bad idea. Opinions? #alocasiaaddicts #alocasia #selfwateringplanter

I've never tried self watering pots for alocasia before z I wouldn't think it would be a problem.
@kevinkiklee is the alocasia master๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ maybe he can provide some insight.
I know a dude that they call the Alocasia king, he puts all of his alos in self watering pots and swears by them
I'd love to get a baby mickey from you in the future, let me know @ShadesofGreen๐Ÿ™Œ my insta is @skyhighs_plants
@skyhighsplants just followed you on IG so it's easier to find you when she's mature enough to produce (as long as I don't kill her before then!)
as @RJG said, @kevinkiklee is amazing with alocasiaโ€™s and iโ€™m sure he would know. the pot he shipped my plant in was in a semi hydroponic pot, with a wicking reservoir and roots hanging into the water, so id imagine that this is perfectly fine for your alocasia as well!
this is my setup and I have nearly 200 alocasias growing in pon in a self-watering setup: https://photos.app.goo.gl/DTLN4spGnUgdvFrF8

alocasias love pon and they grow very healthy. one note about converting alocasias: the leaves may develop edema at first but it should adapt over time. that's why I grow all my alocasias in semi hydro all the way from corm.

btw follow me on my instagram https://instagram.com/theplantstoria. I plan to post about my learnings with semi-hydro in the future.
@ShadesofGreen just looked at your photo. i am not comfortable with the substrate you are using there.

with a semi-hydro setup, it will be wet all the time. using pon or leca allows more oxygen around the roots. when you are using regular potting mix, you are at a much higher risk of root rot.
@kevinkiklee thank you!!! I've got some leca but don't currently have a way to clean it before I can use it (it's -40 F out currently and we're on septic). Is there more risk with a bad rinse on my leca or the soil that it's in currently, you think?
Also, @kevinkiklee your setup is the stuff of my dreams ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฃ I'm following you now on IG!

Do you use Lechuza pon or make your own? Or alternately have another recommendation ? I'll have to get ahold of some either way, I'm just unsure how quickly I can do that- would my plants be better off in regular soil in a normal pot until I can acquire it? What's your process for transferring an established plant from soil to pon?
@ShadesofGreen following this
Do you have perlite? I currently have mine in perlite... It may be a better choice than regular potting soil until you can get some Pon/etc
@WickedValkyrie I do have perlite!! Is the process the same of like.. clean the roots of ALL soil, put it in perlite with the wick in the water reserve?
Yep that pretty much covers it.๐Ÿ™ƒ You may not be able to get 100% of the soil, just do your best. Like @kevinkiklee said, your plant may be sad at first, but it should bounce back. ๐Ÿ–คโœŒ๏ธ
@WickedValkyrie I'm super worried about making them sad ๐Ÿ˜” I have them currently in an even (thirds) of soil, perlite and orchid bark, so should be a relatively easy "clean up." Will the wick give them enough water in just perlite until I can either clean up my Leca or get pon delivered???
Perlite is absorbent so it should work just fine. (: I personally have mine sitting on a tray that I top off with water every few days, but I see no reason the wick system shouldn't work out. (:
