@ChelleMiCorGenX - Hello Michelle!!

You are not the only one impatiently waiting on roots ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ My damn fire sticks ๐Ÿ˜ž

Sooo for starters, hereโ€™s a good cacti/succulent mix I highly recommend! It has excellent drainage and itโ€™s very inexpensive!
Next, youโ€™ll see what looks like a mess!! HaHa ๐Ÿ˜† Itโ€™s not though! Itโ€™s a senecio cephalophorus! Shhh what a mouthful, right?! Well anyways, she was sent to me as a clipping, not one root! Around about the same time as you! August/September! So I planted it in coco coir and perlite! Not a succulent mix, but Iโ€™ve had WAY MUCH better results that way! Once it had good roots, I then put it in my succulent mix! I still only watered it as Greg would tell me! So about twice a month! Same with the other 2 pots I made in the last 2 pics! Those fire sticks did not want to root! Until I put them in coco coir/perlite!!
So for the actual rooting process, you donโ€™t NEED a succulent mix, but you will definitely need it once itโ€™s rooting for you!!
The base is brown because thatโ€™s where the cut was made and itโ€™s now calloused over! That is PERRRRRFECT! If not, you risk running into a bunch of infections and what not! So when a cut is made, you want it to sit out until itโ€™s calloused over BEFORE it touches any kind of soil! Then youโ€™re good ๐Ÿ˜

I hope this helps you out some and if you have anymore questions, please let me know ๐Ÿ˜
@ChelleMiCorGenX Iโ€™m thinking crown rot.. but Iโ€™ll call in the experts to confirm. Maybe we can chop & propagate back into a soil succulent mix with rooting hormone๐Ÿคท๐ŸŒฑโœจ best of luck!! Iโ€™m sure weโ€™ll find out whatโ€™s going on๐Ÿค ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿฅณ @Charli3Plant @JenniferNoel (ik youโ€™re sick queen so donโ€™t worry if you canโ€™t respond, heal my beauty๐Ÿคฉโค๏ธ) @UltraKoreanfir @SvelteKingfern @FairyFly @TheOddAsity @TheConservator
@Prentyce Iโ€™m not a cactus person, but thanks for the tag! (I just donโ€™t know them) Butโ€ฆ I think @SirLiquorice @FairyFly and @itsjordan might know?

I know enough to ask if the stalk is squishy and if thereโ€™s a smell ๐Ÿ˜‚ I would try propagating
@TheOddAsity slay April youโ€™re amazing Iโ€™m so sorry I just think of you as expert everything ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿซฃ๐Ÿค ๐Ÿคท what can I say youโ€™re the bestest ever ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿฅณ
@Prentyce ๐Ÿ˜‚ well thanks! I do know most often who to tag if I donโ€™t know what to do.
@TheOddAsity not mushy, hard, no smell
@ChelleMiCorGenX thatโ€™s good news!! No surgery required. It probably just didnโ€™t develop roots. I have a haworthia aloe (?) someone gave me. I had it in soil since September. No rot, but also no roots. I recently switched it to plain coco coir that I kept the soil misted daily for 2 weeksโ€ฆ and now we have roots!!
@ChelleMiCorGenX I do not have this particular cactus, but it will need to be buried deep enough in the pot to allow new roots... they grow from where the spines are, in most cases. I like April's @TheOddAsity suggestion to get in in some coir that you can keep slightly moistened to encourage root growth. After a month or so, if you tug gently, you should feel it "holding" itself in. Even better, put it in a clear pot so you can see the roots develop. @Prentyce is so sweet, always tagging folks to get multiple POV.

Some of the Cacti just take a really long time, but don't lose faith. ๐Ÿ‘
@UltraKoreanfir THANK YOU SO SO SO MUHC Melisse๐Ÿคฉ๐ŸŒฑโœจ you are the best ever!! I appreciate your support SO MUCH! Thank you thank you thank you๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿค  please let me know if Iโ€™m ever a bother!!๐Ÿฅนโœจ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿค
@UltraKoreanfir it was buried pretty deep, but I realized recently that the pot didnโ€™t have drainage holes, I however was sparing in my water but a think a good soil change is in order. He is one of three and the โ€œoldesโ€ is doing well in good succulent soil. This was in outdoor succulent soil without drainage ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ. Thank you. So you donโ€™t think I need to chop the end off?
For some reason this cutting is not rooting. This cutting is stressed.

You need to adjust/ change the conditions that stress this cutting.

As you didn't say about conditions, I can't tell you without further information: light, type of soil, whether drainage, how you water and how often.
@SvelteKingfern outdoor succulent/fruit tree soil , it did not have drainage holes, but I thought it did, outside in a โ€œgreenhouse โ€œ with heat and grow lights, outside in sunshine when temps above 50, I think the soil and drainage is the stressor as itโ€™s brother (2nd photo) is very happy
Soil has to be succulent/cacti soil (commercially made is dirt cheap), pot needs to have one big drainage hole or several smaller). These conditions are PARAMOUNT.

You must get new soil. In the meantime do not water this cactus, put it aside in a dark dry place. Tag me when you're ready, and I give you precise instructions.

You said the cut off part is hard. That's good.
@SvelteKingfern how long should I put it away
You need to put it away, because YOU need to get new soil and a pot with drainage. (for proper cactus rooting). Get them asap, and then tag me.
@JenniferNoel thank you, I actually do have succulent mix.. well Iโ€™m about to use it up on another plant so I will get what you suggest and some coco coir for the rooting process. Thank you so much
@ChelleMiCorGenX - It deleted the pic ๐Ÿ˜“
All of those plants in the orange pot came to me as clippings!
Now they have ROOTS ๐Ÿฅฐ
@Prentyce - Thank you for the tag BESTFRIEND!! You ARE A ROCKSTAR โค๏ธโค๏ธ

Good luck ๐Ÿค—๐ŸŒต๐Ÿชด๐Ÿ’š
@SvelteKingfern thank you!
@Prentyce - Ok Ok, forgiven! Just this one time though ๐Ÿ˜œ
@ChelleMiCorGenX If that end is just dry and calloused, then no. But if you feel like it is rot and it feels soft, then yes. If you do, let the end callous for about 72 hous beforepla ing it back into the new pot.
What I would probably do is pre-moisten the coir or succulent soil you pot it in, get it pressed in moderately, and then don't water it for like two weeks (lightly misting to keep the top 1/2" moist would be okay, just not WET.) Bottom soaking for about 10 minutes once every 14 days or so will make lower levels of the substrate moist, and might help to encourage roots to seek out the moisture by sending roots downward. But if you have a clear pot, you'll be able to see if the substrate is still moist at the bottom. Moisture meters or just chopsticks can help. If they come out with dirt stuck to them, there's moisture.
Make sure it is put in a warm location with bright light (like a foot or two back from a really sunny window).

I'm glad the others are doing well. The brother in the second poto above...wow! That one looks great! I'd buy that in a โค๏ธ beat.
I'm pretty sure when you get the little one in the coir with a small bit of moisture consistently, you'll get it to wake up. If not, you still have some awesome ones of the same plant.
@SvelteKingfern YAS my QUeen Sophie๐Ÿคฉ๐ŸŒฑ thank you SO MUCH!!! You are incredible as always ๐Ÿซฃ๐Ÿฅณ Ms Athena is looking incredible as always! Greener every day๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ’ซ๐ŸŒฑ
@UltraKoreanfir thank you. The first picture is the momma, the third picture is the momma when I first got her, probably 7 yrs ago? The second picture are her three sons. She had to stay in CA, so I brought these three with me to New Mexico. She was my pride and joy ๐Ÿฅฐ.
The twins are in new soil and pots and hopefully will soon be as happy as their big brother @JenniferNoel @TheOddAsity @UltraKoreanfir ๐Ÿฅฐ
@ChelleMiCorGenX - YAY ๐Ÿ˜ Iโ€™m happy to see the new repots! They will be on their way to big bro shortly! Showing YOU that youโ€™ve made them happy and did a GREAT job ๐Ÿฅฐ
