Whats wrong with my #radish?

The leaves of my radishes are turning red/magenta around the edges, and the veins on the underside too. They are under grow lights, and the roots are still developing. Why are the leaves changing color?
Best Answer
Red/ Magenta usually means a sign of distress.

1. Temperature Stress

Radishes prefer cool temperatures (50-70ยฐF).

Cold stress (temps below 50ยฐF) can cause reddish pigmentation as the plant produces anthocyanins (a natural pigment).

Fix: If your grow space is too cold, consider adjusting the temperature or insulating the plant a bit more to help.

2. Nutrient Deficiency

Nutrient deficiency often causes red or purple veins on the underside, especially in young plants. This can slow root development significantly.

It can be caused by:

Low phosphorus levels in soil

pH imbalance (too acidic or alkaline)

Cold temperatures preventing nutrient uptake

Fix:

Use a balanced fertilizer with phosphorus (e.g., 10-10-10 or 5-10-10).

Check soil pH (optimal: 6.0โ€“7.0); if it's too acidic, add lime; if too alkaline, add sulfur.

Keep the environment temperatures stable to improve nutrient absorption.

3. Intense Grow Light Exposure

If the lights are too strong or too close, leaves may develop reddish pigments as a response to stress.

Fix: Adjust light distance (12-18 inches above plants is optimal). Reduce light intensity if you're using high-output LEDs.
