What is a cat safe plant I can put in a hanging pot near ...
Caught Sampson, our cat, red pawed chomping down on a toxic Pothos! I now realize it should not have been that close, but I didn't know it was toxic, or that'd he chew it. I've grown him cat grass in the past, but it doesnt interest him.
I know he likes spider plants, although considered non-toxic, it can cause hallucinations. I just dont have one big enough for a 10 inch pot and I never see them for sale around here, but I found some on Amazon!

@WandrngDudette
You could always try growing a dwarf variety of catnip if he likes chomping on stuff might as well make it good

@MamaLinne Look at those beauties!!! Thank you so much! But a shipment to Jersey would probably be a pretty penny.
I remembered Amazon sells plants and got some from there! Now to practice patience for the delivery...

@WandrngDudette oh that naughty Sampson! As his punishment, give him lots of pets and ear scritches, and then show me another picture please π
Now to keep him safe! There are different levels of dangerous plants (to cats). Truth be told a lot of plants that are labeled βtoxicβ can be uncomfortable/painful if eaten, but rarely fatal to munch on tentatively because they have oxalate crystals that hurt the mouth. You would have to continue eating this awful burning, painful, drool-inducing mouthful, and they almost always stop a would-be muncher. Itβs a plant defense mechanism. If he is still seems interested in it, I would try to hang it out of reach.
Other non-toxic plants are marantaceae family (calatheas) and hoyas.
However, Some plants are suuuuper toxic, like a tiny bit of sap could be really dangerous and/or fatal. So watch out for these! The plants I would *never* keep in or around my house: sago palm, true lilies, rhododendrons, azaleas.
I also thought of sending my spider plants babies like Deb @MamaLinne π₯° for you but itβs good to be mindful around them still. The leaf edges can be quite sharp sometimes. (If your cat ends up loving them).
The most effective thing I can suggest would be training your cat. You might laugh, but cats are really quite smart, and respond well to training. The most important thing is positive reinforcement when they are NOT monching your plant babies. I also keep some of their things around in my plant room. They have one of their water bowls, a scratcher, like you have already, a few βhangout spots,β and toys. Training IS a lot of attention and care in the beginning, but completely worth it. I have 5 cats, but not a single one nibbles on any of my plants. (I know this might not work for everyone, some cats are just innately drawn towards the forbidden salads.)

@DreamMachine From the status of the leaves, it wasn't his first munch. Surprised I did not notice sooner! He's a bit of a masochist though, for all I know, he enjoys the burn. So, I moved the plant out of reach. Better safe than sorry.
He's a partially trained I'd say actually... He doesn't go on counters or tables. Although he is 10 now, he might not be able to make it to a counter gracefully. π

@WandrngDudette omg π Silly Sampson. Some of my cats are the same with bees, (βspicy fliesβ). Hmm, I didnβt realize he was 10 years oldβ¦might be a little harder to discourage or train, unless very treat motivated. One of my cats comes RUNNING when she hears the sound of me putting the clicker on my wrist.
Have you checked the ASPCA toxic and non-toxic lists? They donβt differentiate the degree of danger in the toxic plants, so itβs easy to freak out reading that one, but there is a nice big non-toxic list to go through.

Thanks for the site!!

@WandrngDudette i havenβt seen anyone mention ponytail palms yet. They are safe with no effects to worry about. My cats and dog munch on mine, and they stay away from my other plants.
