What's this white stuff on my moon valley pilea?

I tried wiping it off with rubbing alcohol (no luck,) and it's not puffy, nor do I see any puffy areas on the plant- so I don't think it's mealybugs. I also don't see any mealybugs. I don't believe it to be powdery mildew either?

I recently got a grow light, it's been getting 14 hours a day under it... is this maybe a built in plant sunscreen? Should I decrease how much light it gets? The new growths are coming in a deep brown/red and honestly it's never been healthier.

This one does have systemic granules in the soil, since one of my plants got scale a couple months ago, I just decided every plant will get it constantly from now on. It was treated with horticultural oil a month ago too- hence some of the marks on the stems. It's had the granules for a couple months.

I think it may be getting too much light? #help #diagnose #question

Hi @Fengo hmmm, if it doesn’t wipe off and you don’t see pests it could be some scarring from either of the treatments?? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I’ve gotten something similar on begonias and wasn’t sure what was happening. I finally attributed it to a build up of salts, fertilizer, calcium in our water here. I’ll be curious to see what others say.
@MariansOasis That's what I'm thinking? I've tried wiping it with rubbing alcohol, with cotton swabs, cotton balls, even a lens cleaning rag and more alcohol. Didn't come off... I also tried scraping it off with my really sharp tweezers and it didn't come off then either.

If it was mealybugs, I'd guess they'd wipe off after all that. I've combed the whole plant for pests, several times over, and I've found nothing.

I did recently give it some liquid plant food, and it's had a TON of light. And I'm in Iowa, where we're on warning for high nitrate levels in the water. There are calcium deposits on the pot it's in too. (Grey terracotta)

I'm thinking it's just scarring? I'm hoping it is! Because I hear mealybugs are no fun, I can barely deal with scale 🫠
@Fengo oh you’ll know when it’s mealies! 😝 Actually they aren’t that bad, as long as you catch it quickly before infestation 😱. And they’re actually satisfying to hunt down and dab with alcohol! πŸ€ͺ😜😝
@Fengo definitely rather deal with mealy bugs than scale!!! Or thrips! πŸ˜–
@MariansOasis that's good to hear! I don't think it's mealybugs though, considering they don't wipe or scrape off... plus those systemic granules should keep them away, fingers crossed!! πŸ˜…
Scale was certainly bad enough, but the plant that was affected is on the mend- has been scale free for a couple of weeks! πŸ₯³
