Serious question: what's the difference between String of...

Seriously. My String of Tears won't quit. On the flipside, my Sting of Pearls makes ME want to QUIT. What's the deal?

#HappyPlants (String of Tears ONLY)
#PlantsMakePeopleHappy (except for the SOP)
#NewGrowth #PetsOfGreg #StringOfPearls #StringOfTears #StringOfWatermelons
5” pot with drainage

@pettiteplants dude. I have tried EVERYTHING. I have three different pots. One gets bottom-watered. One is in sphagnum moss. One is in this pot. I am so DONE.

Honestly, I was hoping there was something different about these two plants besides the shape of the leaves. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
I would try a smaller pot and water when dry. I almost threw mine out but now it’s thriving.
Have you tried using grittier soil? I use half potting soil half perlite. But I know you broke up with perlite lol You could use pumice instead. This way the soil won’t stay wet for long. Oh idk if there’s a difference in the care of the plants.
Yes, and a much smaller, shallower pot. Deep pot = more wet soil.
Don't water until the pearls get a little soft and wrinkled and use a looser soil mix that won't hold too much moisture. My pearls started growing like crazy when I started treating them more like succulents!
@pettiteplants I just can't believe the SOP and the String of Tears are the same plant. I was hoping there was some biological difference - then it would make sense to me that one thrives and one suffers.οΏΌοΏΌ

Maybe @Kiersten knows if there's a biological difference. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
Im quietly sitting back watching this πŸ‘ πŸ‘„ πŸ‘ such a mysterious plant. Everyone seems to have a totally different experience. Srsly check the reviews on the plant page in greg, everone’s SoP has wildly different care! So intimidating, yet tempting.
@sarahsalith They are in the same genus but are different species. The string of tears (or string of watermelons) is Curio herreanus and SOP is Curio rowleyanus.

My best guess at why SOP is so much fussier is that SOT β€˜leaves’ are slightly larger and have more surface area. This might let them photosynthesize more and use the soil moisture faster so the roots don’t sit in wet soil.

But who knows! πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Science is all about making best guesses, what do you think?
