My cider gum has crispy leaves 😭

Hey everyone,

I got this Cider gum less than 2 weeks ago. I read it likes direct sunlight so I put it in a spot where it gets at least a full hour of it.

After a week, I noticed the end of the stems were droopy. I checked the soil and it was dry so I watered it. The soil is kinda compact but I didn't want to repot it right away.

It didn't get better and yesterday, I touched its leaves and noticed they are super crispy. A few are still soft but most of them are crispy.

Is it too much light? not enough water? Something else? I checked the roots and it's not root bound.

Thank you for your help! #help #cidergum

Hi Impe, if it’s in a spot where it gets direct sunlight it also needs to be supplemented with enough water. They do love direct light but it also means that the rate of transpiration from the roots is pretty high. In my opinion, You’ll need to water more often to offset the transpiration. They like moist but not wet soil.

Hope this helps. Happy growing
Hi @Plantoholic, thank you!
I did checked if the soil was dry yesterday but it was still very moist (5 out of 9 on my moisture meter).
Should I water it again anyway?
@impeplants Hello πŸ‘‹ Impe!

Brown leaves can be more problematic, and if the bark starts to turn reddish-brown, you may have a real problem on your hands. This could be a sign of diseases like crown, collar, foot or root rot. You can apply neem oil to the plant to cure these issues. If you find pests and bugs on the plant (check the underside of the leaves), try cleaning off the leaves with a mixture of hand soap and water.

If the plant’s leaves are curling up, this could be due to dryness from a recent repotting. Sometimes, root material gets lost, slowing down the uptake of water. This could be a temporary problem, though, and as long as it was replanted correctly in the potting mixture that covers the roots, it should revive itself.

Proper care of your plants can help prevent issues down the line. Eucalyptus prefers full, direct sunlight, so keep it close to a sunny window. As for watering, these plants are native to Australia and are therefore drought tolerant. They still need to be watered, so check the soil often. During the hotter months, they may need to be watered daily.

The soil should be thoroughly damp after watering. Also, take care not to let it dry out between waterings. If you forget and some of the leaves dry out, just pick them off and pay better attention to your eucalyptus.

Never let your eucalyptus sit in water because this can encourage root rot. A well-draining, loose potting soil mix will also help in this regard. You can put it outside so it can enjoy the sun but only when the temperature is above 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
Hi @TwistedThreads, thank you!
The leaves are not brown so I guess it's a good sign!

The soil is really compact, I wonder if I should repot it right away πŸ€”

I guess I should give it more water and see how it goes!
@impeplants you are very welcome! What’s the weather like right now in Paris?
@TwistedThreads it's really sunny but cold! I'm actually surprised so many of my plants seem to be getting too much sun πŸ˜… But the weather will apparently turn next week and we'll have some rain.
@impeplants I see you mentioned that the soil feels compact. Adding a few things like perlite and coco coir will help loosen the soil and keep it airy. If it feels wet, avoid watering at as you’ll risk overwatering. It’s better to err on the drier side than on the wet.
@Plantoholic Yeah, it's the soil I got with the plant. I wanted to wait a month before repotting it in a better soil but I think I'll do it this weekend. It's really horribly compact 😬
