Whatβs going on with my spider plant?
My previously healthy spider plant is getting a large amount of yellow leaves. I assumed an occasional one was fine (do older leaves die off sometimes?) but there are quite a few now. Does it need to be repotted? Are the babies draining its nutrients? #spiderplant #spiderplantcare
Hello!
First of all, your spider plant looks AMAZING!!!
I always have a bit of trouble with mine lol.
You are correct about what you said, older leaves do die off due to new growth at the top. Its energy will focus on producing new leaves on top of the plant so it decides to just get rid of the older ones so it's normal.
You should check if the plant is root bound because when you water your plant, there could be no room for the water to stay in the soil which causes it to drain out faster (because there are only roots in the bottom of the pot) and leave you plant underwatered which could cause the yellowing in the leaves.
The babies drain a little bit of the original plants' nutrients but DON'T WORRY about that, it's normal, soon you can propagate those babies, put them in water, and they will grow roots and make new plants themselves! (If you want to do that). It is just the beautiful way that plant grows!
Problem: SUN SCORTCH!!!
I think your spider plant is sunburned! It looks extremely close to the window which would result in your plant getting direct sunlight which will burn your leaves!!! You need to take it away from the window a few feet and give in INDIRECT sunlight, not DIRECT!!!
hope this helps!

@BriskRiberry itβs been in this window since it was a cutting. It is west facing so it only gets a small amount of direct sun later in the day. I havenβt had this problem before, so I donβt think the issue is the window. I also have two other spider plants in that window that are nice and green. I think you may be right about it being root bound. Iβll try replanting it. Thanks for your response. I just noticed it has another new baby π
@Sharkdiver Iβm having the same issue. After years of happy in the window, it started getting yellow, pale, even dark brown on the edges. I hadnβt changed the watering schedule. I moved it away from the window, thinking it was sunburn. I removed all the babies. Finally, I decided to repot it. When I took it out of the pot, I found the roots had grown through the bottom of the liner and sitting in water in the outer pot. Yikes! Your plants are such a deep green! What fertilizer do you use, how much, and how often?
@VividBegoniarex Iβve only fertilized once a month this summer using Miracle Gro indoor plant food. Prior to the summer, I hadnβt fertilized at all. I discovered today that it has two new babies. π
@SuperblyLilac what does that do? What is the water flushing out?
