Should I consider repotting my Calathea? I notice the lea...

@UpsideDownNykky Hi Nykky, I never repot any of my plants if I see leaf browning or other signs of distress. Repotting can be stressful for them, and you will not be able to help breaking off tiny root hairs along the way, so plants need to be healthy to recover from repotting. I only repot when absolutely necessary, and most often when the roots are taking over the pot.
I’ll need to see some pictures though, of the leaf browning in question. Do you have a fan in your room for airflow? Very important, airflow. Fungal and bacterial infections and certain pests are more likely to happen in stale damp air. I have at least one, if not more, fans in any room with plants.

@BuffCaperspurge wow full time job repotting them huh you don’t even do that for a banana plant and some can get taller than your house in a few months one of the fastest growing grasses in the world. “Very satisfying to grow i have to say” sorry not trying to go bananas on you lol but that is a lot of repotting out of curiosity have you ever grown one
@OhGollyItsJolly i have palms ive not repotted!! And my BoP is 6 ft tall. I have the pot; now doing the logistics!! Lol
@DreamMachine stale dry air in tight spots perfect for mites too. Must have air flow &
you better put you on a new pair of shoes. Every once in a while you can’t wear the same pot all the time. When you’re a growing kid !! Torture I say!!
*goes back to bonsai basics 😂 still new to torturing plants but it’s a fun learn practicing wabi sabi 🫶🏽

@BuffCaperspurge oh yeah, getting beat up by banana leaves on a stick 6 foot tall “wbop”lol that’s gonna be a fun one
@OhGollyItsJolly a banana plant? No i havent. My hisband would lose his mind!!
@BuffCaperspurge what !!? Why would he? You could literally have like a 200 pound bunch of banana bananas growing in your living room on a 4 foot tall, cavern dish, dwarf banana that you got for $10 🤯
@OhGollyItsJolly ok ill try that one!!! Ill dial 9-1 then wait til he clutches his chest to dial last “1“!!!
@BuffCaperspurge not sure what your referring to husbands health? Hopefully not, Either way the bananas in stores that we buy are Cavendish bananas they are a dwarf species. They grow very well in pots up to shoulder height here’s my big momma dwarf cavendish in the medium size Walmart whiskey barrel it’s kinda hot here. Mother of 5 others I have in pots & 1 by her side 😅 easily feed your entire neighborhood bananas for free ”been breeding elephants & bananas for 2 years now creating a tropical jungle garden bed. It’s been a very drought dry year. We’re about 3 feet behind our average rainfall. Anyways it’s hot water water water. 4 hours in with breaks still watering I need watering 😂🥵
@OhGollyItsJolly I’m using that container to hopefully increase the humidity. I do open the top occasionally , I was afraid lack of air could cause issues, I am very new to using domes. I wasn’t sure if droplets on the walls of the container could damage the leaves, they do touch the sides 😖
@DreamMachine that’s good to know. I unfortunately did not think to take a photo of the browning. I cut the damage off right away because of who I am as a person, haha! 😆 I actually don’t have a lot of fans in the room. I will look into getting fans in the area. I had this type of plant one other time, and unfortunately, it did not make it. I want this plant to like me so bad 😂 😞
@BuffCaperspurge Wow! That’s really impressive. I feel that way with my spider plants. Those plants grow like crazy 😅
I do see one straw coming out of this Calathea (slowly), hopefully that is a good sign.

If you're concerned about humidity, maybe try a humidity tray instead? You might already have all of the items needed to make one, otherwise it's fairly low-cost since it's just a drip tray with pebbles and water.
To make one, fill a drip tray (or shallow bowl) with an even layer of pebbles and add water to the tray. Set your plant on top of the pebbles and make sure it's sitting *above* the water and not in it. The idea is that the water provides ambient humidity for your plant as it evaporates.
Hope this is helpful. Best of luck! 🪴✨️

@ballondusoleil i have a large humidifier that i usually place closest to my BoP & Ti plants but the himidity here has been consistently 80-90% notwithstanding whether it rains or not. Im inclined to keep the humidifier off & unplugged for now. Ive done this before but being in the new house & my recent questionable acrions re: my plant care, im not trusting my instincts so much so someone PLEASE tell me this is the right thing to do!!! Im overly concerned because my large BoP (which was one most damaged during June move), is unfurling her 3rd 16“ new leaf since the move & i want to show her how much i appreciate her hanging w/me!!! Please!!! Answer needed ASAP (while humidity still obtrusive--which could be til Christmas but still) lol
@OhGollyItsJolly well, he DOES like bananas!! And i put a banana smashed into my grandsons oatmeal so i can see the argument! I cant see me 𝓌𝒾𝓃𝓃𝒾𝓃𝑔 the argument ; but i can see it!!! Lol
@BuffCaperspurge hi Tacy! I highly recommend visiting your local plant store for their expertise. They'll have a better sense of the humidity issues in your area and might be able to help you troubleshoot your concerns. My fave local plant store have great staff who have given me a lot of good tips and pointers for my indoor plants.
In the meantime, it sounds like the humidity is high enough inside your home without a humidifier. Maybe consider adding a fan for air flow and preventive measures for mold. Again, your local plant shop should have more insight.
Lastly, if you create a new post about your plant concerns, you'll be able to reach a lot more Greg app users. Some may live in your area so they'd be a great resource too!

@OhGollyItsJolly im so sorry!! My morbid sense of humor!! I meant if i walked in w/a banana plant; he’d ’figuratively’ have a heart attack! I had to fight for every plant ive ever bought, esp the big ones. Hes softened up, well he knows when hes beaten, more like it! Lol i throw out an elephant ear once in a while or show him a pic (like old mans palm) just to see his reaction!!! Now that we r in our brand new home, i thinl the freak out would be overwhelming. After 49 yrs., i know hpw far to push! Give me a few months & ill buy again from Eureka!! I get my 2-gal plantered items feom them!! I am so sorry i gave u that impression!! Hes fine!! Besides hes a carrier, he only ’gives’ strokes!! (another joke!!) God, somebody stop me!!!
@ballondusoleil I wish I could say the same about my local nursery that has been here before I’ve been alive. I’m 47 You go in there and it’s just a box store that sells only plants & plant stuff “at inflamed prices depending on item & season”. I will say they typically have a very nice selection so you can go and look through 40 of the same lemon trees and pick up one whatever size or variety you want but still I walk in there and feel like I’m a scientist. Cause they don’t have a clue except for the 85 year-old man who you know is just not there anymore. Miss old Mr Redfern. I’m not saying everyone that works. There is an eggplant but nine out of 10. Don’t even know what pH is. Or how to calibrate a pH pen. Now, honestly, you don’t need to know any of that to be able to grow plants, but if you’re going to sell plants and run a nursery, I think it should be part of the application 🥴
but I will go back there for the selection. I don’t necessarily have to walk in there and learn from them.
Hope you have a good day and the next time you’re in your local nursery tell them how good they truly are because I bet you, they’re not appreciated as much as they should be.

@BuffCaperspurge i’m glad to hear he’s ok maybe I think that right away because Ive been around elderly most of my life. Anywho I bet you could slip a few right by him lmfao poke poke 👉🏽 1st pic is 2.5” pot 2nd is 4finger plugs. lol and they start out even smaller than that. But likely wouldn’t make the travel the 1 inch finger plugs, however all survived 😅 . If you’re a teacher put it in your classroom it will blow their mind and be a hell of a learning experience for all of you. That four pack of ice cream bananas was $32 I believe on the Walmart website I know for certain there’s a nine dollar dwarf Cavendish on there now with seven dollar shipping.
no, I’m not promoting anything. I just happen to buy a couple more plants could help myself show a jujube tree, 2 cotoneaster, & dwarf mulberry tree. Excited for them to get here juju should be here tomorrow Anyways thought I would share just in case you wanna go a little bananas lol

@OhGollyItsJolly sorry to hear about the lack of knowledgeable plant staff in your area! Good thing the Greg community is a resource.
