What are those spot on my Alocasia?
Hey everyone,
So, I noticed those spots forming on the leaf of my Alocasia. They just started being a different shade of green and then became white like this.
I don't see any bugs on the plant so I was thinking too much sun as it was right in front of the window and we are starting to get a lot more sun now. So I moved the plant a bit farther away to a spot she liked last year.
I'm planning on repotting it soon too. And I'm always careful with watering. I check that the soil is dry before watering every time.
FYI, it's the only leaf left on this plant. It only had two for the last few months and one of them became yellow and died a few weeks ago.
What do you guys think it is?
Thank you!!

@impeplants Hello π Impe.
It looks like spider mites to me.
How to get rid of spider mites on Alocasia plantsβor any plants
If the damage to your plant isnβt too bad yet, you can do a number of things to help kill off the stubborn little buggers:
Rinse the leaves with cold water. You can use a rag to do this, or you can set the plant in the sink. Remember, these little buggers like warm, dry conditions. So give them the boot with cold, wet conditions.
It there is foliage that is seriously yellow or brown, go ahead and cut it off. You unfortunately canβt bring it back.
Wipe the plantβs remaining leaves down with a solution of dish soap (without a degreaser in it) and water. Remove If the plant has dense foliage, you can use a spray bottle, let the solution marinate on the plant, and then rinse it off with cold water.
Use a neem oil solution to wipe down or spray your plants. Many houseplant pests hate neem oil, and it will also help your plantβs foliage look lovely.
If neem oil doesnβt workβor if you simply canβt stand the smell of itβuse an over-the-counter insecticidal houseplant spray. Check that spider mites are listed on the bottle.
I highly recommend using Neem Oil every 7 days until the infection is gone. I use it myself. Plus if you are able to, quarantine your plant as well.

Hi @TwistedThreads! Thank you for your reply.
That's so weird, I can't see anything on the leaf bugwise, there isn't even any webbing π€
I'll treat it anyway and make sure I don't have any in my other plants too.

@impeplants you are welcome. If you take your fingernail on that leaf does it come off?
@TwistedThreads What do you mean about the fingernail? What should I do?
Hey @impeplants , I can see from your plant card that your pot has no drainage. Alocasiaβs hate wet feet and this is most likely the cause for the issue.
Iβd recommend repotting in weβll draining soil and moving it to a pot with drainage holes else you risk root rot.
Hope this helps, happy growing

Hi @Plantoholic
Yes, I know, I'm planning on repotting it in a pot with drainage BUT! Like I said, I always check that the soil is dry before watering. I use a moisture meter to make sure. So I really don't think this is the issue π€ Or my moisture meter is broken π

Iβve had this happen to mine on a couple of other occasions also. First one was after I fertilised it (probably fertiliser burn) the second was when it got too much sun and lastly when it was too cold and dry.
Iβve had quite a few experiences with this plant since itβs native to my country. Odd how I try so hard sometimes to keep them perfect and then Iβd randomly walk out one day and itβs growing everywhere without much intervention. π π€£

Yeah, they are just soooooo fussy!!! I have 3 different Alocasias, one lost all its leaves this winter and I have no idea why π€·, one is doing fine and even flowered a few days ago and then this one that started with so many leaves and is now down to just the one with those spots. No idea why! It's one of my first plants I bought and I'm kinda amazed it hasn't died yet, to be honest π
But it's interesting what you said about the temperature since it has been a bit cold lately and I don't have the heater on. It's probably not too humid also. I'm considering buying a humidifier soon so it might help.
