For a Golden Barrel cactus, use inorganic top-dressing materials like small gravel, pea gravel, pumice, lava rock, or poultry grit (horticultural grit). These materials, usually 1/8 to 1/4 inch in size, prevent crown rot, keep the potting mix in place, provide stability, and look natural. Tips for Application:
Avoid Organic Mulch: Do not use wood chips or bark, which retain moisture and promote rot.
Keep it Thin: A layer of only 1/4" to 1/2" is sufficient; avoid piling high around the stem.
Prevent Soil Compaction: Use coarse materials that allow water to pass through quickly.
Ensure Good Drainage: Pair top dressing with a fast-draining cactus/succulent soil mix (e.g., 75% perlite/pumice, 25% soil).

@RooRoo Thank you for the Best Answer! I believe that it is mostly for decoration. Because if the Rock are too heavy or too big that will tend to compact the soil leading to bad drainage! Lightness is key as the soil needs to drain water quickly so the roots donβt sit in water/moisture.
@slayonium I don't use water retentive soil... I use soil specified for Cactus and succulent.
