2ft to light, indirect
8” pot with drainage
Last watered 2 years ago
I’m sorry the leaves on your beautiful Dieffenbachia plant are turning brown with yellow halos. This is a fungal or bacterial disease and it’s caused by overwatering and/or poor air circulation.
▫️You may not be able to use the self draining pot this time of year, when your plant is dormant. This type of pot is overwatering your plant. Consider adding soil aerators (pumice or perlite) that will help the soil to dry out faster. Use a chop stick to gently work these soil aerators down into the soil. Or, consider relocating your plant somewhere it will get more light, or purchase a LED full spectrum grow light. But, don’t worry Melanie, with a little TLC you can nurse your plant baby back to health.
πŸ₯ Unfortunately, this disease maybe contagious, so isolate, remove those infected leaves (using sterilized scissors) and spray those healthy leaves with Neem Oil or any copper-base fungicide. You can also spray your other plants in your oasis with Neem Oil, as a preventive.
πŸ’§It’s important to test the soil before watering your plant, because its watering needs changes with the seasons. During the fall/winter, tropical plants need less water than they did during their growing season (spring/summer). So, it’s best to insert your index finger 2 inches into the soil, (the 2nd knuckle) and if the soil feels dry… and only if it feels dry, water your plant. This is a way, your plant can tell you it’s thirsty. πŸ™ƒ Slowly water your plant until water drips out of the drainage hole. But, don’t let your plant sit in the water that came out of the drainage hole, because that will cause overwatering too.
πŸ₯Your plant-baby is sensitive to the chemicals in tap water, so avoid watering with tap water. Use filtered or rainwater water. And when it’s time to water your plant, (the top 2 inches of the soil is dry), spike its water. πŸ™‚ Add 2 teaspoons of 3% hydrogen peroxide per one cup of water. This will eliminate ALL harmful pathogens in the soil that will cause root rot and it will aerated the soil, helping the roots get extra oxygen ( stimulating root growth). Don’t use this 3% hydrogen peroxide every time you water your plant, because it purifies the soil; eliminating the good and bad bacteria.
πŸ™ I hope your plant will make a speedy recovery.
Any suggestions on how to get Stella healthy?
@Ada3 thank you for the detailed guidance! I have done the above and will keep my fingers crossed Stella makes a full recovery! I am good about using Neem from time to time ! I am afraid I brought home a new plant and what caused the ruckus!!
