I think this mostly is the result of too direct and harsh sunlight. Sunburn (Dry, Tan/Brown Patches):
Cause: Sudden exposure to harsh, direct sun, especially midday summer sun.
Signs: Dry, tan, or brown spots that won't heal; tissue dries up and turns white to grey-brown.
Solution: Move to filtered light, use a sheer curtain, or provide shade; gradually acclimate to brighter light.
@MarkedDamiana21 I am not your girl for cactus related issues but let me tag some people that could possibly help! @SuperbRaspfern @Luckeecharm1 @CactAdjacent @Charli3Plant @roxyvivien @vvvelo @TheConservator sorry if I missed anybody!
@DreamMachine oh sorry. I’m not into cactuses 🌡
That looks like corking. It develops of these from stress, it's actually pretty common. Fairy Castle Cacti don't tolerate cold temps very well. Since you are in New York, I suspect it's from that. Especially if you have her next to a window. The side facing the window will develop the corking from cold or even direct sun. Really any stress can cause it in these.

When the damage first happens the cacti will get soft spots. They aren't incredibly obvious unless you're touching it. The cells that are damaged and sometime burst from the cold, and sometimes frozen water. To heal cacti form corking as a way to heal. Like a scab on us. Only on cacti the corking doesn't go away like a scab.

It doesn't hurt them. To prevent more just move her further from the window. These are NOT the most resilient of cacti and they will get damaged from both extreme cold and also extreme heat.

You don't need to remove any damaged parts unless it bothers you to look at it. That's up to you she'll be fine though so don't worry too much. πŸ˜‰

Thanks for the tag @DreamMachine 🩷
