Is this pot too big to replant my Philodendron Gloriosum ...

Hi there! My giant #PhilodendronGloriosum has roots growing out of the bottom of its 17 inch self-watering pot and its stem is a lot over the edge of the pot. I need to repot it but it’s currently blooming with a new leaf spike. It also seems very happy. Do I wait until those are fully formed to repot? Or spring? It’s 34 degrees outside. Is 24 inches (black pot) too big? It’s in a white pot identical to the one pictured. Thanks! #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #repotting

Please stay away from self-watering planters with these plants. They need excellent drainage or a longer period between watering if you choose to use them. All of mine are in pots with drainage holes and very loose mix except for one. Any planter that is self-watering, I recommend drilling holes through the bottom to allow the water to drain away. Be mindful that the larger the pot, the water may travel outwards and away from the roots where they are needed. Going up in size should only be done by one or two inches. Crawlers like these prefer having room but your baby is large and may want to grow runners and roots along the bottom for more support. If that’s what you’re trying to do, make sure your soil is loose and favorable for them to develop a strong root system. Do not add extra water at each watering because of the pot size. Keep it the same and water at the roots only to make sure the roots get what they need instead of watering vacant soil. You’ll know when it needs more water (as it grows longer in length and starts to fill in that pot). Good luck!

Edited to add that you’re repotting indoors so as long as you make sure the surface you place the unearthed plant in is warm, it’ll be fine. I repot mine when they need it. It’s always indoors so I worry more about the warmth of the house, the countertop and any water I provide. Just be gentle and your baby will be fine. If you wait, it’ll start to drop in shape and you will have to chop that section to make it go back to crawling instead of falling downwards. I have one that I purposely allow to do this. She’s being kept a small size on purpose. If you want to keep yours in one piece, repot now.
I don't think it's too big, but is the black pot supposed to have a removable liner? It looks like a self watering pot.
#anthuriumqueen may have more insight as to when to re-pot. I "just" got mine a couple months ago, so not a whole wealth of info on my end. Caroline says she lets them crawl wherever and just do what they do, so I'm kind of going with that. 😊
Following! 😊 I’m gonna have to repot my baby Gloriosum I just got very soon!
@UltraKoreanfir I got the black plant from Target and it didn’t come with anything else. It is a self watering planter though!
Personally, even if a plant needs a repot, as long as it's not showing signs of distress I put it off until conditions are ideal. That may be growing season, good weather, the right pot, favorite medium, etc.

So personally, I'd wait until spring since she seems happy. Based on the photo of what's growing I'd say you may reach 24" by the time spring comes πŸ˜‚
